காஞ்சிபுரம் புதிய ரயில் நிலையம் அருகே உள்ள இக்கோயில் 1300 வருட பழமையானது. பல்லவ மன்னன் ராஜசிம்மனால் கட்டுவிக்கப்பட்டது. வாம முனிவர் மறுபிறப்பு வேண்டாம் என்று வேண்டி பூஜித்த கோயிலாக காஞ்சி புராணத்தில் கூறப்படுகிறது. கஜ லட்சுமி, தக்ஷிணாமூர்த்தி, மகிஷாசுரமர்த்தினி, ஜலந்தரஸம்ஹர மூர்த்தி, ப்ரம்மா, விஷ்ணு மற்றும் துவார பாலகர்கள் என பல அழகிய சிற்பங்களும் கோயில் அமைப்பும் மிக சிறப்பானது. The visit to this Pravasthanam Shiva Temple, on Big Kammala St, was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Iravasthanam Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this temple. This Piravasthanam Temple is just opposite side of Iravasthanam. This is one of the eight surviving Temples built by the Pallavas at Kanchipuram. 

The sthala purana of this temple was written by the 18^th Century Sri Sivagnana Munivar under Piravathanapadalam.  The Original song in Tamil is reproduced as given below.

48. பிறவாத்தானப் படலம் (1651-1660)

1651 பவன னோடென் பதிற்றுக் கோள்களும்

இவறிப் போற்றும் இடங்கள் கூறினாம்

சிவனைச் செவ்வாய் முதலி யோர்தொழும்

புவியிற் பிறவாத் தானம் போற்றுவாம்

பவனன் -காற்று. இவறி-விரும்பி. 1

1652 வாம தேவன் என்னும் மாமுனி

காமர் அன்னை கருவின் வைகுநாள்

Some of the important details are...

The temple is facing west, a simple structure with a sanctum, artha mandapam and a  two tier vimana.  The griva is of 16 flat surfaces with Viruthaspuditham and  8 faces shikara/ Shikara. The sanctum is on a raised padabandha adhisthana. Bhuta vari is on the up griva. There are 6 Yazhi pillars on the outer wall of sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is of 16 flat face Dhara Linga.

The Sanctum walls has the various bas reliefs. The North wall has the bas-reliefs of Durga/ Mahishamardini ( keeping the left leg on Simha and holding bow on her Left hand ) and Jalandhara Samhara murti. The east side wall has the bas reliefs of Lord Shiva’s dancing ( Vrischika karna ), Brahma, Vishnu  and Dwarapalakas are on both side. On the south side wall Dakshinamurthy with Various postures of Lions – listening Lord Shiva’s preaching and Gajalakshmi is sitting on a Lotus keeping both legs in hanging position.

There is a Shiva Linga shrine at the entrance with paintings of Vinayaga and Subramaniar.

HISTORY AND  INSCRIPTIONS

There is no inscriptions found in this temple. As per the architecture style, the historians concluded that the temple was constructed by the 8^th Century Pallava King Rajasimhan aka Narasimhavarman-II ( 700 to 729 CE ). It is believed that this was the first temple built at Kanchipuram before Kailasanathar Temple. The temple is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India ( ASI )

LEGEND
The word Pirava ( பிறவா ) means preventing the rebirth. As per the legend Sage Vamadeva, while he was in his mothers womb, prayed Lord Shiva to get a boon of non rebirth. As per Lord Shiva’s advice came to Kanchipuram, installed a Shiva Linga and  worshiped. Satisfied the devotion of Sage Vamadeva,  Lord Shiva granted the boon of non-rebirth. 

TEMPLE TIMINGS:

The temple opening is unpredictable and it was told that the temple will be kept opened full day on Maha Shivaratri day.

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is on the Big Kammala Street ( Jawaharlal Nehru Street ) about a KM from Kanchipuram Railway Station.
