07th
December 2018.
At the
entrance of the Village on the left side was the Sri Chokka Perumal Temple in
ruins. Facing east. There is no Vimana on the sanctum or entrance arch. The
sanctum sanctorum consists of a sanctum, an artha mandapam, and a maha mandapam.
Vegetation growth was observed over the sanctum and entrance. Except roof, the
structure was found to be in good condition and why this was abandoned is not known.
The Moolavar was shifted to the nearby Shiva Temple and installed in a separate
sannidhi.
The
original name of Karrankaani ( donated to those who learned 4 Vedas ) was later
corrupted to the present name of place Kathankanni. During The Chozha period, this
Kathankannai was also called Veera Chozhachathurvedhamangalam.
The temple
has the 13th and 14th Century Kulothunga Chozha and Kongu
Chozha’s period inscriptions on the sanctum wall and sanctum adhistanam. From
the inscriptions, the Moolavar name was mentioned as “Kulothunga Chozha Vinnakarathalwar”.
The inscriptions record about exemption tax to the Two lands, conducting pooja
& Celebration, and donation of Mandapa pillars.
