Thiruvanpurushothamam Temple / Purushothama Perumal Temple, Thirunangur, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Thiruvanpurushothamam Perumal temple was a part of the Temples Visit in and around Sirkazhi on 15th September.  After Annam Perumal’s darshan, we went to this temple. This is the 30th Divya Desam of 108 Divya Desam dedicated to Lord Vishnu and mangalasasanam (10 Pasurams) was done by Thirumangai Alwar. Also, this is one of the 11 Divya Desams, also called Thirunangur Tirupathis around Thirunangur.

Some of the important features of this temple are…
The temple faces east with a 5-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Garudan are after the Rajagopuram. The Temple complex consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. In the sanctum, Purushothaman, with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi, is in a standing posture. There are no idols in the koshtam. In artha mandapam, Senai mudhalvar.

Ramar with Sita and Lakshmana as Chakravarthy Thirumagan sannadhi  is in the prakaram and Anjaneyar sannadhi is on the opposite side.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTION
The temple existed before the Chozha period, and later contributions were received from Chozhas and Vijayanagaras. Chozha period and Vijayanagara period inscriptions are found in this temple.


ARCHITECTURE
This temple is very small. The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam and a simple pada bandha adhistanam.  Vimanam is called Sanjeevi Ghraha Vimanam.


LEGEND
Lord Shiva danced in anger at the death of his consort in the Yagna of Daksha. In the process of  dance, his lock of hair touches the ground 11 times, i.e., 11 forms of Shivas appeared. Devas, afraid of this, sought the help of Lord Vishnu. Shiva’s anger reduced after seeing Vishnu, and he asked him to appear in 11 places in different forms. Vishnu appeared in 11 temples in different forms around Thirunangur. These Rudras are called Ekadasa Rudras or Kings of Devas.

ANNUAL CELEBRATION
Thirumangai Alwar Mangalasasana utsav festival will be celebrated as Garuda seva in the Tamil month Thai (January - February). Respective Urchavars will be brought from all 11 Thirunangur Thirupathis  on the Garuda Vahana and Thirumangai Alwar in Hamsa Vahana to Thirunangur (From Thirunagari) Manimaadakkoil. Thirumangai Alwar’s pasurams will be recited on the occasion. The Urchava murtis of Thirumangai Alwar with his consort Kumudhavalli Nachiyar will be taken in a palanquin to all the 11 Thirunangur Divya Desams, and respective pasurams will be recited in each temple. The Garuda Seva Utsavam is a 3-day festival, which  starts with Manjal Kuliyal Utsavam on the first day. Lakhs of devotees in and around Sirkazhi used to attend the festival.    

TEMPLE TIMINGS:
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH:
Thirunangur is 12 KM from Sirkazhi, 34 KM from Chidambaram and 2.4 KM from Annakoil.
On the Sirkazhi to Poompuhar bus route, get down at Mangaimadam. From there, 3 km away is Thirunangur, and a lot of autos are available.
From Sirkazhi to Thiruvenkadu a Budhan, Navagraha sthalam, buses pass through this place Thirunangur.
The nearest Railway Station is Sirkazhi.
