The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes is already posted in this blog. The visit to the above Temples on the banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. This Gangadeeswarar temple is on the eastern banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam.

 

This Sri Kasi Viswanathar temple is on the western banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam. The 18th-century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the sthala purana of this temple in Kanchi Puranam under Sarva Theertham Padalam.

46. சர்வ தீர்த்தப்படலம் (1619 - 1644)

1619   இருட்கொடும் பிறவி மாற்றும் இலகுளீச் சரமீ றாகத்

      தருக்கறு காட்சி யோகா சாரியர் தளிகள் சொற்றாம்

      மருத்துத மலர்மேற் பூத்த வளம்புனல் குடைவோர் தங்கள்

      கருத்தவிர் சருவ தீர்த்தக் கரைபொலி தலங்கள் சொல்வாம் 1

1639 விசுவநாதேச்சரம்

      பாற்றினம் மிடைந்த கூர்வாய்ப் படைமழுக் குடங்கைப் புத்தேள்

      மாற்றருங் கருணை முந்நீர் வாரியின் நிறைந்து தேங்கும்

      நாற்றிசை அணவுஞ் சீர்த்தி நளிபுனல் சருவ தீர்த்த

      மேற்றிசைக் கரைக்கண் மேவும் விச்சுவ நாதத் தானம்  

1640   மலர்தைல உலகின் முக்கண் வானவன் இனிது வைகுந்

      தலமெலாம் மருவுங் காஞ்சி விச்சுவ நாதன் றன்பால்

      கலிபுகழ் விசுவ நாத முதல்வனுங் காசி தன்னில்

1641   வெள்ளிவெண் கயிலை யாதி இடங்களின் மேன்மை சான்ற

      அள்ளலம் பழனக் காஞ்சி யணிநகர்ச் சருவ தீர்த்தப்

      பள்ளநீர்க் கரைக்கண் எய்தி வைகினன் பரிவால் அங்கண்

      வள்ளலைத் தொழுது முத்தி மண்டபங் காண்போர் முத்தர்

Some of the salient features of this temple are...

The temple faces east with an entrance arch. Balipeedam and Rishabam, Vinayagar, and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are in the center of Muthi / Mukthi Mandapam. Moolavar is in the Sanctum Sanctorum facing east. A Pallava period icon of Somaskandar is on the back wall of the sanctum sanctorum. 

There are 9 bas reliefs on the south side wall, 5 bas reliefs on the west side wall, and 3 bas are on the north side wall. Mahishasuramardini, Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar, Murugan, Dakshinamurthy, Chandikeswarar, and Bhairavar are also there.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of a sanctum Sanctorum, an ardha mandapa, and a mukthi mandapa. The mukthi mandapa pillars are of 4 and 8 flat faces. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

It is believed that the original temple was built during the 7^th to 8^th Century Pallava period.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 29th January 2022, along with Sri Hiranyeswarar and Sri Kameswar temples

LEGENDS

It is believed that all the Shiva temples of this universe are in the mukthi mandapa in the form of Suksma / Cutcumam. This temple is the best when compared with Kasi. Also, it is believed that the mukthi mandapa was not destroyed even during pralaya. Those who get up in the early morning and worship Lord Shiva in this mandapa will obtain Mukti.

      உற்றுறை உயிர்க்கும் நீர்க்கும் ஒருதனித் தலைவ னாகப்

The temple faces west with an entrance from the south. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum is a little large. Sri Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are in the ardha mandapa.

ARCHITECTURE

The Temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum and an ardha mandapam. An Eka tala vesara vimana is in the sanctum Sanctorum. In the griva koshtam stucco images of Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai. The 8 Rishabas and 8 Vimana Thangis (Baravaahaa)  are in the eight directions on the vimana. It is believed that the original temple was built during the 7^th to 8^th Century Pallava period.

LEGEND:

Varuna, along with Sri Ganga Devi, worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Varuna heads the earth’s requirement of water and the living things in the water. Hence, Lord Shiva is called Gangadeeswarar.

      தன்னிகர் பிராட்டி யாரத் தழீஇக்கொளச் செய்த வாற்றால்

      அன்னதற் கியையக் கைம்மா றளிப்பவன் என்ன அங்கேழ்ப்

      பொன்னவிர் சடையோன் தீர்த்தப் புனல்களுக் கிதனை நாட்டும்  

1632   கொலைகளிற் கொடுமை சான்ற பார்ப்பனக் கொலைவல் வரீக்

      கொலைகருக் கொலைதாய் தந்தைக் கொலைக்கவை கோட்டு நல்லான்

      கொலைமுதல் பிறவும் நீங்குங் கொடுவினைப் பாசத் தெவ்வைக்

      கொலைபுரி மரபின் நும்பாற் குடைந்தெமைத் தொழப்பெற் றோர்க்கே

1633   முரிதிரை சுருட்டு தெண்ணீர் நும்மிடத் தொருகால் மூழ்கி

      விரிபுகழ்த் திருவே கம்பம் விழைதகக் காணப் பெற்றோர்

      உரிமையின் ஆன்ற நாற்கூற் றுறுதியும் பெறுவர் மீள

      அரிவையர் அகட்டுள் எய்தா தெம்மருள் அகட்டின் வாழ்வார்  

1634   என்றிது நிறுவித் தீர்த்த நாயகன் இலிங்கத் துற்றான்

      அன்றுதொட் டங்கண் மேவும் அலங்கொளிச் சருவ தீர்த்தத்

      தின்றடம் புனலின் மூழ்கி எழில்வளர் திருவே கம்பஞ்

      சென்றுகண் டிறைஞ்சப் பெற்றோர் செய்கொலைத் தீமை தீர்வார்  

1635 சருவ தீர்த்தப் பெருமை

      தந்தையைச் செகுத்த பாவம் தணந்தனன் பிரக லாதன்

      முந்தையோர்ச் செகுத்த பாவம் வீடணன் முழுதுந் தீர்ந்தான்

      மைந்துடைப் பரசி ராமன் வரீரை வைதத்த பாவஞ்

      சிந்தினன் சருவ தீர்த்தச் செழும்புனல் குடைந்த பேற்றால்  

1636   அருச்சுனன் துரோண மேலோ னாதியர்ச் செகுத்த பாவம்

      பிரித்தனன் அசுவத் தாமன் பெறுங்கருச் சிதைத்த பாவம்

      இரித்தனன் உலகில் இன்னும் எண்ணிலர் சருவ தீர்த்தத்

      திருப்புனல் குடைந்து தீராக் கொலைவினைத் தீமை தீர்ந்தார்  

1637   சிலைநுதல் மகளிர் மைந்தர் இன்றுமத் தெண்ணீர் மூழ்கின்

      கொலைவினைப் பாவந் தீர்வார் குரைகடற் பரப்பென் றெண்ணித்

      தலைவரு முகிலின் கூட்டந் தனித்தனி வாய்ம டுக்கும்

      அலைபுனல் சருவ தீர்த்தப் பெருமையார் அளக்கற் பாலார்

The temple is on the western side of the Sarvatheertam Kulam and faces east with an entrance arch. Stucco image of Lord Shiva on the entrance arch. Balipeedam and nandhi are in the Mukha mandapam. Moolavar in the sanctum sanctorum is a little small.

Nagars and Vinayagar are in the praharam. The temple consists of sanctorum consists of Sanctum, artha mandapam and a mukha mandapam. An ekathala Vesara Vimana with 4 nasis is over the sanctum. In the griva koshtam, stucco images of  Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, and Brahma. 8 Rishabas and 4 Nandhis are in the grivam. It is believed that the original temple was built during the 7^th to 8^th Century Pallava period.

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapa, maha mandapa, and mukha mandapa. The sanctum sanctorum was built with granite stones. An eka tala vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Shiva,  Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtams.

It is believed that the original temple was constructed during the 8th Century Pallava period and later renovated during the Vijayanagara period. 

Maha kumbhabhishekams are conducted on 20th February 2013 and then on 1st June 2022. 

LEGENDS

As per the legend, Ma Parvati as Kamakshi came to earth and worshipped Shiva Ling, which she made out of sand, under the Mango tree. The 4 Vedas with different tastes give fruits in the tree. When Kamakshi, thought of doing abhisheka with all the holy water of the earth. To her wish, all the holy water forms a river and rushes towards her. On seeing the holy river with speed, She embraced the Shiva linga to save from the flood. Then the rivers on the earth came to Sarva Theertha kulam. Hence this Sarva theertham is being used for the Abhishekam of Lord Shiva of this temple. Hence, Lord Shiva is called Theertheswarar.
