Sri Seetha Eswarar Temple, Sarva Theertham Kulam, Kanchipuram, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes is already posted in this blog.  The visit to the above Temples on the banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020.

The Seetha Eswarar Temple is on the south side of the Sarva Theertha Kulam. The 18th-century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the Sthala Purana of this temple in Kanchipuram under Sarva Thirtha Padalam.

1643   இராமேச்சரம் - பரமாநந்த மண்டபம்

      உருவமென் கமலம் பூத்த உயர்சிவ கங்கைத் தென்பால்

      திருவிரா மேச்ச ரத்துச் சிவபிரான் திருமுன் னாக

      இருவினைப் பிறவிக் கஞ்சி எய்தினோர்க் குறுபே ரின்பம்

      மருவுறும் பரமா நந்த மண்டபம் ஒன்று மாதோ

1644   மண்டபம் இனைய மூன்றும் வைகறை எழுந்து நேசங்

Some of the important details are...

The temple faces east, opposite the Sri Lakshmana Eswarar Temple. Both temples share a common entrance. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the mandapam. Moolavar is on a Lotus pedestal, Avudayar. The bas–relief of Seetha worshiping Lord Shiva is the inner mandapa. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma.

In praharam Chandikeswarar and Naga Krishna. Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are in the mukha mandapa.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, artha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is ona pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, veerakandam and tharanga pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with bhuta ganas, kapotam with nasikudus, and viyyalavari. An eka tala vesara vimana is over the sanctum sanctorum. Shiva, Dakshinmaurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the greeva koshtams.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

It is believed that the original temple was built during the 7^th to 8^th Century Pallava period. Chozha period 11th to 12th Century inscriptions are found on the front and side walls of ardha mandapam. 

LEGEND.

After Rama established and worshiped Lord Shiva, in front of the Sri Ekambareswarar temple, Seetha also thought of establishing a Shiva Temple. Seetha established her Shiva Temple on the banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam and worshiped Lord Shiva. Hence, Lord Shiva is called Seetha Eswarar.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, etc.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the opening and closing times are unpredictable.  

HOW TO REACH:

This temple is on the bank of Sarva Theertham Kulam and Kanchipuram to Vellore Road.

About 2.4 km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.0 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 27 km from Arakkonam Railway Junction, and 75 km from Chennai Central Station.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
