The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes is already posted in this blog.   The visit to the above Temples on the banks of Sarva Theertham  Kulam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. This Hiranyeswarar Temple is on the banks of Sarva Theertham (Kulam). 

The 18^th Century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal, had written the sthala purana of this temple, in Kanchipuram under Iranyesa padalam & Sarva Theertha padalam.  

37. இரணிேயசப் படலம் (1282 - 1303)

1282   அரணி யின்கனல் ஐயர் கூற்றடு

      சரணி முப்புரா ரீசஞ் சாற்றினாம்

      முரணி யங்கதன் குணக்கண் முந்தொழும்

      இரணி யேச்சரத் தியல்பு ரைத்துமால்  

1283   இரணி யப்பெய ரசுரர் ஏறானான்

      குரவ னாய்நலங் கொளுத்து வெள்ளியைச்

      சரண மேத்துவான் தனியி டத்தினில்

      வரவ ழைத்தனன் வணங்கி விண்டனன்  

1284   அரும்பெ றல்திரு வரசு நான்பெறத்

      தரும்ப டித்தொரு விரதஞ் சாற்றென

      விரும்பு மந்திரக் கிழவன் வீங் குதோள்

      இரும்பின் அன்னவற் கிறைவ ழங்குவான்  

1285   பவேட்ட வாறிது வாயின் மேவரக்

      கேட்டி யிவ்வுரை கேடி லாற்றேலாய்

      நாட்டம் மூன்றுடை நாதன் சேவடிக்

      கீட்டும் அன்பினால் தவமி ழைத்திநீ  

1300   பற்றுகா யாதி யாதி மனைவியர் பலரு மேனைச்

      சுற்றமு மொருங்கு காஞ்சித் தென்னகர் எய்தித் தாந்தாம்

      பெற்றிடும் பெயரான் முக்கட் பிரான்குறி நிறுவிப் போற்றக்

      கொற்றமார் முப்பு ராரி கோட்டத்தின் குணபால் எய்தி.

      அன்புடை முறைம யாறே அருச்சைன யாற்றி யுண்டி

      இன்பமும் வெறுத்துப் பன்னாள் மெய்த்தவம் இயற்றும் ஏல்வைப்

      பொன்பொதி சடிலப் புத்தேள் எதிரெழுந் தருளப் போற்றி.  

1302   மக்களின் விலங்கின் மற்றை யோனியின் மண்ணில் விண்ணில்

      உக்கதீப் படைகள் தம்மின் உணங்கலி னரீ மென்னத்

      தக்கதிற் புறம்பின் உள்ளிற் பகலினி லிரவிற் சாவாப்

      பொக்கமில் வரமும் மும்மைப் புவனமும் புரக்கும் பேறும்  

1303   எம்பிரா னருளக் கொண்டா னிரணிய கசிபும் ஆசை

      அம்பகன் முதலி யோரு மவரவர்க் கினிய பெற்றார்

      வம்பலர் மலரிட் டன்னோர் வழுத்திய தலங்க ளோடும்

      உம்பர்சூழ் இரணி யேசம் உத்தமச் சிறப்பி னோங்கும்

Some of the important features of this temple are...

This temple is on the western banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam. Facing East with Balipeedam and Rishabam. Moolavar is of 16-flat surfaced Dhara Linga on a square Avudaiyar. In Koshtam Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma, and Uma Maheswarar.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

It is believed that the original temple was constructed during the 8th Century Pallava period and later renovated during the Vijayanagara period.  Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 22nd June 2007. 

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 20th January 2022, along with Sri Kashi Viswanathar and Sri Kashi Viwanathar temples. In connection with the Maha Kumbhabhishekam, major renovations were carried out, which included rectification of the vimana, the addition of a stucco image of Hiranya worshipping Shiva, construction of parivara sannidhis like Vinayagar, Chandikeswarar, and Rishaba mandapa. 

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, Artha mandapa, maha mandapa and mukha mandapa. The sanctum sanctorum was built with granite stones. A two tier vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.   

LEGEND

As per Sthala Purana, Hiranya  asked his Kula Guru, Shukracharya, how to get a Kingdom with unimaginable wealth. Shukracharya told him about the glory of Kanchipuram and the worship of Lord Shiva. So Hiranya, with his brother Andhakasura, his son Prahlada, his descendants, his wives, and his grandchildren, came to Kanchipuram. They installed separate, separate Shiva Lingas around Kanchipuram and worshiped Lord Shiva. Pleased by the devotion, Lord Shiva gave Hiranya the boon of not being killed by anybody, ie, neither by God nor Human beings, on land or in the sky, during the Day or night, inside the place/ room, or outside the palace/ room.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri, pradosham, etc.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the opening and closing times are unpredictable.  

HOW TO REACH:

This temple is on the bank of Sarva Theertham Kulam and Kanchipuram to Vellore Road.

About 2.4 km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.0 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 27 km from Arakkonam Railway Junction, and 75 km from Chennai Central Station.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the nearest Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
