Gangadeeswarar Temple, Sarva Theertha Kulam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes are posted already in this blog. The visit to the above Temples on the banks of Sarva Theertam  Kulam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. This Gangadheeswarar temple is on the eastern banks of Sarva Theertam Kulam.


The 18th Century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal, had written the sthala purana of this temple in Kanchipuranam under Sarva Theerta Padalam.

      உற்றுறை உயிர்க்கும் நீர்க்கும் ஒருதனித் தலைவ னாகப்
      பெற்றனன் அதன்பேர் கங்கா வரமெனப் பிறங்கு மாலோ

Some of the important details are...
The temple faces facing west with an entrance from the south. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of Sanctum Sanctorum. Moolavar in the sanctum is a little large. Sri Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are in the ardha mandapa.

ARCHITECTURE
The Temple consists of a Sanctum and artha mandapam. An Ekathala vesara Vimana is on the sanctum Sanctorum. In griva koshtam stucco images of Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai. The 8 Rishabas and 8 Vimana Thangis ( Baravaahaa)  are in the eight directions on the Vimana.  It is believed that the original temple was built during the 7th to 8th Century Pallava period.

LEGEND:
Varuna along with Sri Ganga Devi, worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Varuna heads this earth’s requirement of water and the living things in the water. Hence Lord Shiva is called Gangadeeswarar. 

TEMPLE TIMINGS:
Since Oru kala/one-time pooja is conducted the opening and closing times are unpredictable.  

HOW TO REACH:
This temple is on the bank of Sarva Theertham Kulam and Kanchipuram to Vellore Road.
About 2.4 KM from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.0 KM from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 27 KM from Arakkonam Railway Junction, and 75 KM from Chennai Central Station.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Nearest Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
