The
visit to this Sri Karukathamman Temple at Chetpet was a part of Shiva, Maha Vishnu,
Vinayagar, Murugan temples Visit”, in Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai, Chetpet and
Choolai areas on 25th September 2022. This is one of the Amman
temples on the banks of the Holy River Cooum. This temple is very similar to the Sri
Garbarakshambigai Temple at Thirukarugavur in Thanjavur District near
Kumbakonam.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…..
The
temple faces east at the Junction of Valluvarkottam High Road, Harrington Road,
Mayor Ramanathan Salai, and MC Nicolas Road. The temple’s backside praharam of
the temple was taken over for the expansion of Road / Junction. For circumambulation of the sanctum sanctorum, we have to walk on the footpath of Nicolas Road.
Amman’s
stucco image is on the top of the Mukha mandapam. Sri Karukathamman is in
sitting posture with 4 hands and Jwala makudam in sanctum sanctorum. While the
upper hands are holding pasam and Damru, the lower hands are in abhaya varada
hastam. Stucco Dwarapalakis, Bala Vinayagar, and Sri Devasena Subramaniyar are
at the entrance of Ardha Mandapam. Gaja Lakshmi’s stucco image is on the top of
the Ardha mandapam entrance. Trishul, balipeedam, and Simha Vahanam are in front
of the temple. In Kostas Rudrakshi, Vaishnavi, Brahmi, and Durgai.
A
Kolu mandapam is in front of the temple. Navagrahas and Annanmars are on the north
side of the mandapam. Guru Bhagawan, Nagar, and Arasamaram are on the south side of the temple. A lot of cradles are tied to
the Arasamaram / peepal tree / bhodhi tree.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of a sanctum sanctorum, an ardha mandapam, and a mukha mandapam. The total temple was constructed with bricks.
The sanctum sanctorum is on an adhistanam and an ekathala salakara vimana is on
the sanctum sanctorum. Amman’s various forms are in the greeva Kostas.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple may be about 300 years old and the same was reconstructed
in recent years ie the end of the 20th century.
The present temple was reconstructed in 1924. Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 03rd
December 2012.
And further, Ashta bandana maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted to Sri
Karukathamman, Vinayagar, Durgai, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Annanmars,
Guru Bhagwan, and Navagrahas on, 03rd December 2008.
The
Kolu mandapam was built ( started on 15-05-1989 ) and opened on 21st
August 1989.
The
temple is being maintained by Pothu Jana Seva Sangam. A new building was
constructed during 1989 – 1990 for the Sangam.
LEGENDS
This
temple’s presiding deity Sri Karukathamman is considered equal to Sri Garbarakshambigai temple near Kumbakonam. Hence Devotees pray Amman for Child boon,
removing marriage obstacles also in this temple.
For
Child boon, Lemon is offered as Prasad for 5 consecutive weeks, for the same
Husband wife has to attend in this temple. It is further believed that the Karu
/ fetus will be under the care of Sri Karukathamman till the delivery. After
delivery, the father and mother have to come along with the child and a cradle to be
tied on the peepal tree, after doing abhisheka and offering new vasthra & Pongal.
Tonsuring and ear-boring ceremonies are
also conducted in this temple for the Child born after Amman’s boon.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Amavasya days, the Annual festival during Aadi month, etc,. Amavasya
tharpanam and thithi are also offered in this temple.
