Sri Vembuli Amman Temple / Arulmigu Kolaathamman Vembuliamman Thirukoil / அருள்மிகு கொல்லாத்தம்மன் வேம்புலியம்மன் திருக்கோயில், Harrington Raad, Aminjikarai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kolaathamman & Sri Vembuli Amman Temple was a part of Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar, Murugan temples Visit”, in Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai, Chetpet and Choolai areas on 25th September 2022. This is one of the Amman temples built on the banks of Holy river Cooum. The temple is on the Harrington Road, on the west side of the Pachaiyappa’s College play ground and called as “Arulmigu Kolaathamman Vembuliamman Thirukoil”.

Some of the Salient features of this temple are…
The temple is facing east with an entrance arch. Stucco images of Vembuli Amman and Kolathamman  are at the centre and Maha Lakshmi is on the left and Saraswati is on the right.

The main Sri Vembuli Amman temple is facing east with balipeedam, simham and a Trishul. Amman is in sitting posture

In praharam, Kolaathamman ( is considered as the elder sister of Vembuli Amman ), Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Kasi Viswanathar, Visalakshi, Vinayagar, Nalvar, Stucco image of Vembuli Amman, A Shiva Linga ( unearthed during Excavation ), Sowbhagya Lakshmi, Navagrahas, earthen fire stoves for doing pongal on platforms, Hanuman, Alangara mandapam and a 300 years old neem tree trunk. The Alangara mandapam has the stucco bas-relief image of Shri Shiva and Parvati’s marriage with Saraswati, Maha Lakshmi, Maha Vishnu and Nandi playing mridangam.




ARCHITECTURE
The main temple consists of sanctum sanctorum ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. Amman’s various forms are in the kostas. Since the praharam is covered completely couldn’t get the details of the Vimanam. A dravida Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Ref : Chennai Managara Kalvettukkal – சென்னை மாநகர கல்வெட்டுக்கள் - published by Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department.

The inscription of Kali year 4924, Saka year 1745 and Gregorian calendar year 1823 CE, records that Visaka Venkatachalam, his wife and their Children had donated for this temple’s thirupani and excavation of a Tank / Kulam. The inscription reads as ….

( 'நாயக்கர்' என்னும் சொல் ஒன்றினால் காட்டப் பட்டுள்ளது. )
 

01st January 1938 inscription records that Hospital. N Ponnusamy Mudaliar’s sister and Urigam General Contractor M. La. La. Sri M Sambasiva Mudaliar’s wife Visalakshi Ammal  constructed the zinc sheet mandapam.


Ashta bandhana maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 14th September 1986 and 24th June 2010.

On 27th September 1996 Ashta bandhana maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted to Sarva Sakthi Vinayagar Mandapam, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniyar Sannidhi and Arasu Vembu marathadi and Sri Nagaraja Vinayagar  sannidhis.

On 27th March 1995, K N Rubi Panchatcharam’s sons N P Chakravarthy and brothers donated 68 KG... details of the material not known.

Arasan Vembu as Paramasivan and Parvati, Thirukalyanam was conducted on 09th December 1992, by Sela Vedagiri and Mohana Selva Vedagiri.

The Alangara SuRRu mandapam and Sri Jai Anjaneyar Sannidhi was constructed through Sevarthigal Seva Sath sabha and ashta bandhana maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted in presence of Chettinattarasar Dr M A M Ramasamy, who was also the owner of Chettinad cement.
   



The Chetpet was named after T Namberumal Chetty, who constructed Indo-saracenic  building in Chennai like, Central Station, High Court buildings etc, as Chetty Pettai, which has got corrupted to the present name of Chetpet. And this Aminjikarai is a part of Chetpet.

The 250 to 300 years old neem tree, sthala vruksham was fallen down on 16th May 2004 and a new sapling was planted. The trunk of the old tree with Amman’s face is kept on display in the corridor.



LEGENDS
It is believed that Vembuli Amman was initially under a neem tree. She revealed her power through offering of boons and blessing to her devotees. It is believed that She will not letdown her devotees on any circumstances, who prays with true love and devotion. The earthen cooking stoves after the entrance is the proof of her power on her devotees.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas and Utsavam is conducted during the month of Adi. The Utsavar will be decorated with flowers and procession will be held in grand manner.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept opened between 06.30 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.30 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is on Harrington road in Aminjikarai and about 100 meters from Vellore – Chennai Road, Take a left on Harrington Road coming from Chennai Central Railway station.
The temple is about 1.2 KM from Nungambakkam Railway Station, 5.7 KM from Koyambedu Bus Terminus and 5 KM from Chennai Central Railway station.
Nearest Railway station is Nungambakkam.
