Vijaya Vigneshwarar Alayam / Vijaya Vigneshwarar Temple /ஸ்ரீ விஜய விக்னேஸ்வரர் ஆலயம், Choolai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Vijaya Vigneshwarar Temple was a part of Shiva, Maha Vishnu, Vinayagar, Murugan temples Visit”, in Choolaimedu, Aminjikarai, Chetpet and Choolai areas on 25^th September 2022. This is one of the oldest Vinayagar temple of Choolai area on the Vijaya Vigneshwarar Koil street. During 19^th Century the place around this Vijaya Vigneshwarar Temple was called “Vijaya Vigneeswarapuram” and Purasawalkam was called as Purasapakkam.

 

Main Deity      : Sri Vijaya Vigneshwarar.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…

The temple is facing east with a mukha mandapam  with 4 pillars. Stucco image of Vigneshwarar is on the top of mukha mandapam. The Moolavar Sri Vijaya Vigneshwarar is in the sanctum sanctorum, his Vahana and balipeedam are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. There is no parivara sannidhis.

ARCHITECTURE

The Temple consists of sanctum sanctorum and a open mukha mandapam. The mukha mandapam is supported with 2 nos of stone pillars. The stone pillars has the square and octagonal sections. Couldn’t identify the type of adhistanam,  due to the raise of ground level.

The Sanctum sanctorum and the vimanam is of Gajabirushta Vimanam  with single tier. The complete temple was constructed with bricks.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

In 757 CE Inscription records the construction of karungalmandapam, Thanneer pandal, Agraharam at Purasapakkam ( Purasawalkam ) on the land west side of Muthu Mudaliar Thottam was constructed, by Thirumanaj Chengal Choolai Muthu Mudaliar Kerbappasitharkar alias Arunachala Mudaliar

The saha year 1718 and Gregorian calendar year 1796 CE inscription ( Chennai Managara Kalvettukal published by Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department ) with Vinayagar bas relief on the top records the construction of this Vijaya Vigneshwarar Temple, a place created a kitchen  for cooking food for the Brahmins and Soothras / other castes and the periphery limit of this temple was named as “Vijaya Vigneshwarapuram”, by Arunachalam Mudaliar’s son Muniyappa Mudaliar. Muniyappa Mudaliar renovated and maintained the Agraharam Chatram, Thanneer Pandal and kitchen for the Parathesi’s cooking near kal mandapam at Purasawakkam, established by his father. Also he continued the PrumaN bhojanam ( annadhanam ..?) For this endowment Shops were constructed and rented to the merchants.

No particular legend is involved with this Vinayagar, but there are many legends on the Vinayagar in general is applicable to this Vinayagar also. Devotees prays this Vijaya Vinayagar to get victory in all their ventures.

Apart from oru kala pooja, special pooja is conducted on Vinayagar Chathurthi day.

The Temple is 1.6 KM from Madras Vepery Veterinary  College, 2 KM from Chennai Central, 12 KM from Koyambedu bus terminus.
