The
Visit to this Sri Arumuga Swamy Temple also known as Perumbairkandigai Murugan
Temple at Perumbairkandigai was a part of “Shiva, Maha Vishnu and Amman Temples
Visit”, in Perumbairkandigai and Orathy on 14th April 2024. This
Temple is on a small hill with concrete roads laid up to top for both climbing
and descending. There are 251 steps on the step route. The 14th to
15th Century saint Arunagirinathar Has sung hymns in praise of
Murugan of this temple. In this hymn, Arunagirinaathar mentions this place as
Perainagar.

Pamban
Swamigal in his hymn mentions that worshipping here is equivalent to
worshipping the 29 sacred places of Lord Muruga, which includes Arupadai Veedu
and other Murugan Temples.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are….
The
temple is facing South with balipeedam and Dwajasthambam. A Vel mandapam is on
the east side of the temple. Stucco image of Arumugar on Peacock vahana is on
the top of the ardha mandapam. Peacock vahana, Agasthiyar, Arunagirinathar,
Pamban Swamigal are in the ardha mandapam. Moolavar Arumugar is with six heads
and 12 hands on a Peacock vahana. Sri Valli Devasena are on both sides. This sannidhi is also called as Sathru Samhara
Yanthra sannidhi, where an yantha was installed.
In
praharam Selva Sundara Vinayagar and
Sundara Vinayagar sannidhis, balipeedam and Dwajasthambam.
Vinayagar,
Idumbam, Navagraha and Parai Pillaiyar Sannidhis are also at the base.

ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum
sanctorum is on a gramiya style adhistanam built with stone from adhistanam to
prastaram. A two tier Brick Vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images
of Arupadai Veedu Temple’s moolavars are on the Tala koshtams and Murugan’s
various forms are on the vimanam. Sigaram is of Vesara style.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
The
original temple may be 500 years old and reconstructed during Vijayanagara period and extended
during 20th Century.
It
is believed that the temple was constructed by Muthuswamy, whose Samadhi is on
the hill near the temple with a Shiva Lingam installed.
On
the wall of the mandapam 19th -20th Century inscription records
that, the line ( a layer of the mandapam ) is the gift of Vedha Reddiyar, son
of Ve. Venkat Reddiyar and Subbammal. He may be one of the donor for the
construction of the mandapam. The inscription reads as….

A
03rd July 2013, inscription plate on the top of the Mandapam top,
reads as, “Sri Valli Devasena Samedha Subramaniya Swamy Sathru Samhara Yantha
Sannidhi”, gifted by T S Rangababu Reddiyar Srimathi R Rukmanidevi of Old
Tambaram, Chennai 45.
Maha
kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 10th July 1989 and 14th
September 2005, The temple is being maintained by Nadupalani Thandayuthapani Dhathathreya Trust.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that Muthuswamy, who came to this Perai Nagar after a long time
away, happened to see a Sanyasi reciting the Thirupukazh, Thiruvasagam,
Thevaram, etc,. sitting on the hill, every day. Since the Sanyasi didn’t turned
up few days, Muthuswamy searched the Sanyasi on the Hill. But to his surprise,
a Vel / spear was found on the place where the sanyasi used to sit. Muthuswamy,
started poojas to the Vel and latter a temple was constructed after 40 years.
It
is believed that Sri Arumugar of this temple was worshipped by the sages Agasthia
Maharishi, Sage Thumbi and Sage Sukhar, Also worshipped by Shanmuganandha
Swamigal, Krubanandha Variyar, Pamban Swamigal and Vilangadu Duraisamy Pillai.
It
is believed that, after the Soora samharam at Thiruchendur, on the way to
Tiruthani, this is the first temple where Arumugar with Sri Valli Devasena
stayed here.

Apart
from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on Tuesdays, Fridays, Thai
poosam, Vaikasi Visakam, Kiruthigai, Panguni
Uthiram, Kanda sashti, Pournami, Amavasya days.
