The visit to this Sri Sundararaja Perumal Temple
at Azhakiyamanavalam, in Tiruchirappalli District, was a part of “திருச்சி மரபு நடை - Tiruchirappalli Heritage Walk”, from 18th to 19th July 2026,
organised by “எண்திசை வரலாற்று மரபுநடைக்குழு”. This temple is in the midst of the fields, away from human habitation.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a balipeedam and garuda
thoon. Bas-relief of Garudan on the Garudathoon faces the Moolavar. Moolavar is
with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Moolavar Sri Sundararaja Perumal is about 8 feet tall
on a pedestal.
In the praharam, Thayar Sannidhi, Visvaksenar, and Nagars are under a
peepal tree.
ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, an
ardha mandapam, and metacolour sheet mukha mandapam. The temple was built with
stone from adhistanam to prastaram. The sanctum sanctorum is on pada bandha
adhistanam with Jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts
with vedikai. There are koshtams and pilasters. The prastaram consists of
valapi, kapotam with nasi kudus. And vyyalavari. The one tala vimanam, greevam,
and vesara sigaram are over the bhumi desam. Stucco images of Mahavishnu’s
various incarnations are on the tala and greeva koshtams.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the temple is more than 1000 years
old, but there is no evidence to prove it. As per the iconography of
Moolavar, the temple may belong to the 10th to 12th century
Chozha period.
The brick structure of an abandoned Chozha-period temple is
on the north side of this temple. For what purpose it was constructed is not known. According to Bhattachariyar, similar brick structures are found around Azhagiyamanavalam.
LEGENDS
According to legend, this place was once an Agraharam where about 2,500 families lived.
It is said that Sriragam Perumal was kept in this
temple for about 12 years during Muslims invasion.
It is also said that the Vaishnava saint Ramanujam
visited this temple and worshipped Sri Sundararaja Perumal.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala Poojas, no other special poojas
are conducted.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is about 1 km from Alagiyamanavalam
village. On the Road from Manachanallur to Thirupanjili, after 2 km from
Manachanallur, take a left to reach Alagiyamanavalam, and this village is about 5
km from Manachanallur, 12 km from Srirangam, and 23 km from Trichy Junction.
The nearest railway station is Srirangam.
