HISTORY
The story of Kaduveli Siddhar is associated with the Irumbai Mahakaleshwarar Temple, a Shiva Temple. During his period, the place suffered due to drought without rain. It was told to the king that this was due to Kaduveli Siddhar’s severe penance. To stop this, the king sent a Devadasi dancer. Disturbed by the dance, the Kaduveli Siddhar stopped his penance. During the Urchavar's procession, the anklet of the Devadasi dancer had fallen down. Kaduveli Siddhar fixed her anklet. Seeing this act the people started mocking him. Angered Siddhar, sang a song on Lord Shiva to prove his devotion and dedication. Immediately, the Shiva Linga burst into 3 pieces. Seeing this, the people and the King realized their mistake and sought an apology from the Siddhar. Kaduveli Siddhar has sung a song, and the Shiva Linga joined back.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that this temple belongs to the Pallava period and that it was reconstructed later. The Rajagopuram was constructed in 1964. The mukha mandapa with stucco images was built in 1966. Kumbhabhishekam was conducted in 1971 and 1989. In 2005, Kumbhabhishekam was conducted after renovation through the Thuluva Vellalar Community.

LEGEND:
As per the legend, the Demon Somukasuran stole 4 Vedas and hid under the sea. Vishu took the Macha – Fish – மீன் – avatar and retrieved it and gave it back to Brahma. By this action, Vishnu got very happy and started playing ferociously in the sea. Due to this planet, the living have suffered. So Lord Shiva took the form of a sea stork and taught a lesson to Vishnu. Realising his mistake, as a parikara Vishnu stayed here and worshipped Lord Shiva for many years.

Since the fish lives in water, it is believed that those who have the kandam – fear of death in water (as per astrology)- to get rid of the kandam, worship Lord Shiva of this temple.

Amareswara Temple / Tri Thasar Temple, Kanchipuram, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu.

Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 25
21st February 2020.
The visit to this Amareswara Temple on Nimanthakara Othavadai St, Periya Kanchipuram was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21st February 2020. After Sri Masathan Thali Temple’s Visit, our next destination was this temple.  Thanks to Babu of Kanchipuram for providing me with the Daylight photographs and Alexander Rea’s pictures, which were taken in 1909 CE. I also extend my sincere thanks to Veerasamy Ayya for providing details on Tri Thasar. How Alexander Rea mentions Lord Shiva’s name as Tripurantaka Eswarar is not known.

Thanks to Babu Mano for the details in Tamil.

The 18th-century Sivagnana Swamigal had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi Puranam. The Sthala Purana describes the war between Devas and Asuras. As per the advice of Ambal, Devas worshiped Lord Shiva, and the details are given in the legend. The sthala purana is reproduced as given below...

Moolavar: Sri Amareswara, also called as Tri Thasar ( திரி தசர் )

The temple is facing east in an area of 30 Cents. Stucco images of Shiva and Murugan and a Maharishi in a sitting Posture are on the Rajagopuram. Also, Ambal is in a standing posture on the right and  Indra is standing on the left. Balipeedam and Rishabam with mandapam are immediately after the entrance arch. Moolavar is of Dhara Linga with 16 flat surfaces. Ambal Abirama Sundari is in a separate sannidhi. Somaskandar bas-relief is on the back side wall of Moolavar. HISTORY
As per the architecture, the original temple might have been built during 8th century Pallava King Narasimha Varma-II (700 – 729 CE), popularly known as Rajasimha. The temple was built with brick and pillars & sculptures are with sandstone. As per Alexander Rea, who documented this Pallava-period Shiva temple in 1909, this temple had the sculptures of Oorthuva Thandava Murthy, Ravana Anugraha Murti, Gangadhara Murthy, and Mahishasura Mardini panels. Now there is no trace of these sculptures, which were completely destroyed in the name of renovation.  Lord Shiva of this temple was also called Tripurantaka Eswarar.

LEGEND
As per the Sthala Purana, with the help of Ambal, the Devas/Amaras defeated the Asuras. This made them think that they were superior and become arrogant. To teach a lesson, Lord Shiva installed a very small துரும்பு / straw and askedthe  Devas to destroy it. Nobody could succeed. Devas prayed to Ambal to give a solution for this. In turn, Ambal said that all powers and actions are vested with Lord Shiva. So she asked the Devas to go to Kanchipuram and worship Lord Shiva. Hence, Lord Shiva is called Amareswara.
