Maha Shivaratri 2020 – Kanchipuram  Shiva Temples  Visit- 27

The visit to this Kadageswarar temple on Big Kamala St, Melkathirpur, Periya Kanchipuram was a part of 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. After Sri Ari Sabam Bayam Theertheswarar Temple’s Visit, our next destination was to this temple.

 

The 18^th Century Sivagnana Swamigal  had written this temple’s sthala purana in Kanchi puranam.   The songs are reproduced as as given below...

கடேகச்சரம்

நவமணிக் கடகம் பூணும் ஞாங்கருங் கடகே சானச்

சிவபரஞ் சுடைரப் பூசை செய்துதன் கரத்திற் பூண்டாள்

அவிர்மணி நகையாள் போற்று மக்குறி யிரண்டுங் கண்டோர்

தவலரு மலநோய் மாற்றி முத்தியில் தவிர்ந்து வாழ்வார்  

அன்னண மருச்சித் தேத்தி யாளுடை யெயம்பி ராட்டி

உன்னுவோர் பிறவி மாய்க்கு முள்நகர் வரைப்பின் முற்ற

மன்னிய வளங்க ளெல்லாம் மனங்களி பயப்ப நோக்கிப்

பன்னரும் பெருமை சான்ற பரவெளிப் பிலத்தை யுற்றாள்  

Moolavar       : Sri Kadageswarar

The temple is very small with sanctum Sanctorum, in between buildings. Moolavar is in the sanctum. Balipeedam, Nandhi, Vinayagar and Navagrahas are in the mandapam. Stucco image of Lord Shiva with Parvati is on the back side wall of the sanctum sanctorum.  

A Stucco image of Somaskandar image is on the top of the mandapa. A single tire vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.

LEGEND

Ambal Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva after wearing a string around her waist. Established a Shiva Linga with a bracelet Hence called as Kadakeswarar. In another legend, since Ambal worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple in the form of Crab – Kadagam, hence called as Kadageswarar.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the closing and opening times are unpredictable.

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is about 1.3 meters from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 600 meters from Kanchipuram Railway station, 28.0 KM from Arakkonam and 65 KM from Chennai.

Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram and Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
