Athmanatheswarar Temple, ஆத்மநாதேஸ்வரர் கோயில், திருவாலம்பொழில், Thiruvalampozhil, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 127^th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and the 10^th  Sthalam on the South side of the Kaveri River in Chozha Nadu. This temple is on the banks of the River Kudamurutti. This place maintained the same name from the 6^th to the 7^th Century as Thiruvalampozhil and belongs to Thenparambaikudi Village (which existed during that time).

In Periya Puranam, Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar visited this temple after worshiping Thirukadaimudi. But we couldn’t get the hymns.

அங்கு அப்பதி நின்று எழுந்தருளி அணிதிரு ஆலம் பொழில் வணங்கிப்

பொங்கு புனல்பொன்னிப் பூந்துருத்திப் பொய்யிலியாரைப் பணிந்து போற்றி

எங்கும் நிகழ்திருத் தொண்டர் குழாம் எதிர்கொள்ள எப்பதியும் தொழுது

செம்கயல் பாய்வயல் ஓடை சூழ்ந்த திருக்கண்டியூர் தொழச் சென்று அணைந்தார்

In Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal Purana Sekkizhar records that he came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruvijayamangai. He didn’t mention this place in particular, but as other temples on the way.

தலையின் மயிரைப் பறித்து உண்ணும் சாதி அமணர் மறைத்தாலும்

நிலை இலாதார் நிலைமையினால் மறைக்க ஒண்ணுமோ என்னும்

விலைஇல் வாய்மைக் குறுந்தொகையுள் விளம்பிப் புறம்போந்து அங்கு அமர்ந்தே

இலைகொள் சூலப் படையார் சேர் இடங்கள் பிறவும் தொழ அணையார்

Some of the important features of this temple are.....

The temple faces west with a 4-tier Rajagopuram on the main road. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the sanctum Sanctorum. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the Sanctum. In the sanctum, moolavar is of swayambhu. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, and Durgai. Dakshinamurthy is Medha Dakshinamurthy.

In the outer prakaram praharam, Sri Devasena Subramaniyar, Vinayagar,  Pancha Shiva Lingas, Kasi Viswanathar & Kasi Visalakshi. In the inner praharam, Subramaniyar, Navagrahas, Nalvar, Moola Vinayagar, Pancha Lingas, Chandikeswarar, Kasi Viswanathar, Sri Valli Devasena Murugan, and Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal.    

Ambal is in a separate temple, like a sannadhi with a vesara vimana. Ambal sannadhi is facing south. 

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. One tala vesara vimana is over the sanctum. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams. 

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

Since Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before the 6^th to 7^th Century and was reconstructed as a stone temple during the Chozha period.

Most of the inscriptions are damaged. As per inscriptions, Lord Shiva was called Then Parambaikudi Thiruvalampozhil Udaya Nathar, Thenparambaikudi Thiruvalampozhil Udaya Mahadevar, and the place was called Thenparambaikudi Thiruvalampozhil.  

Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal also mentions in his Thiruthandagam as “Then parambaikudi meya thiruvalam pozhilanai sinthi Nenjamee- தென் பரம்பைக்குடியின்மேய திருவாலம் பொழிலானைச் சிந்தி நெஞ்சே”.

LEGENDS

It is believed that Kasiba Maharishi and Ashtavasus worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Indra worshiped Lord Shiva after creating a pond, took a bath, and was relieved from the curse. Sundarar was reminded of Nandikeswara’s wedding at Thirumazhapadi.

It is believed that worshiping Ambal Gnanambigai of this temple will attain wisdom.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Apart from Regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Avani Moola functions, Kandar Sashti, Navaratri in the month Aippasi (October – November), Somavaram (Mondays) in the month Karthigai (Nov – December), Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi (Feb – March).

The temple is 1 km from Thirupoonthuruthi, one of the Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam, 4 Km from Kandiyur, 6.4 km from Thiruvaiyaru, 15.4 km from Thanjavur, 51 km from Tiruchirappalli, and 335 km from Chennai.

The nearest Railway Station is Thanjavur.
