Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Rishaba (believed to be of Swayambhu) are in the mukha mandapam. Moolavar is of Swayambhu. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy (Rishabam is also shown under Shiva’s feet), Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai.

In praharam Vasantha Vinayagar, Adhikara Vallavar (Yamathamaraja Sannadhi), Chottrudaya Eswarar, Vinayagar, Murugan, Somaskandar, Arthanareeswarar, Mahalakshmi, Gajalakshmi, Saptamatrikas, Kasi Viswanathar, Sudharma  Munivar, the Guardian deities Chinnandavar, Periyandavar, Sri Arumuga Perumal, Sri Senthamaraikannan, Chandikeswarar, Nalvar, and Sri Dakshayani Ambika Sametha Imruthayanjar.

This shrine is called the “Yama Dharma shrine”. The Shrine is in the form of a cave about 6 feet below the ground level and is believed to have been constructed during Mahendra Varma Pallava (640 CE).

There are no Navagrahas in this temple; instead, there are nine shallow holes (“குழி -Kuzhi”) on the floor stone in front of Nandhi. These are considered Navagrahas, and people used to light lamps in the holes. Sudharma Munivar’s jeeva Samadhi is in the outer parakara.

There are two Ambal sannadhis, and one is facing South. The main Ambal sannathi is an old one, on the left side of Moolavar, facing east.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and artha mandapam spread over 12 acres. There is an entrance arch and a 1st-level Rajagopuram base (which seems to be of Pallava construction), and the second-level Rajagopuram is of 3 tiers. A Two-tier Nagara Vimana is over the sanctum sanctorum.

It is believed that both fruits and unripe plantain from the Sthala Vruksham, after being offered to Lord Shiva, will be let into the water and not given as prasada to devotees. It is believed that if consumed will be infected with deceases.

As per another legend, there was a conflict between Vayu and Adhiseshan regarding who was greater. In that, Adhiseshan holds Mount Kailash, and Vayu tries to blow out from the hold. Some pieces had blown out from Mount Kailash and fallen down on the earth. One of the pieces had fallen down in this place, Thiruppainjeeli, hence called Then Kailayam.

In another legend, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal was traveling to this temple. He was very tired and feeling very hungry. Lord Shiva came in the form of Andhanar and asked Appar the purpose of his travel. After hearing this, the Andhanar offered food that he was carrying. The Andhanar also guided him to the temple and disappeared. Appar realized that the Andhanar was none other than Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, with Parvati, appeared as Rishabaroodar and gave darshan. Hence, Lord Shiva was called Chottrudaya Eswarar. This event is celebrated in the month of Chithirai on Avittam Star Day (April-May).
