HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. The same was reconstructed as a stone temple during Chozha period and further extended during Thanjavur Nayakas period and nattukottai Nagarathars. The Chozha king Rajarajan-III inscriptions are recorded from this temple.

Rajaraja-III’s  6th (5+1) year inscription  records the endowment of land measuring ½ ma  gifted to this temple after purchase for 600 kasu by his ThiruPayatrurudayan Panchanethivanan.( as a Care taker ). The inscription is damaged in many portions.

Another Rajarajan-III’s period inscription ( damaged ), might records the donation of 2 ma land after purchase for 7000 kasu. This was donated by Pallavarayan Alavanthan, Chokkanatta Peruman and their brother Vaipur Kizhavan Jananadha kalapalar’s son Govinda Peruman.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 20th August 1975 and 06th June 2011 after renovations.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, a Merchant lived in this place was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Nagapattinam was close to this place on the sea shore and had a port which dealt with export and import businesses during those days too. The Merchant carried pepper to export from Nagapattinam port and on the way there was a toll gate / customs check post where he has to pay the fees / Taxes. It would be heavy loss if tax is being paid, so he prayed Lord Shiva to change in to pulse ( payaru – பயறு ), so that it will not attract taxes and back to pepper after the Check post. Lord Shiva had done as requested by the Merchant. It is believed that the merchant spent all the money earned as profit, for renovating this temple. Hence Lord Shiva is praised as Thirupayatrunathar and this place as Payatrur.

Bhairava maharishi worshiped lord Shiva of this temple. It is believed that those who are suffering from eye related ailment can get cured after praying Lord Shiva and Ambal of this temple.
