The
Kortallaiyar river basin occupies a unique position in the history of Indian
archaeology. The first Palaeolithic tool in India was discovered in this region
at Pallavaram near Madras, the present Chennai, on 30th May 1863, by
Sir Robert Bruce Foote. R B Foote was born on 22nd September 1834
and joined the Geological Survey of India in September 1858 and retired as Superintendent
in 1891. Died at Calcutta on 29th December 1912 and cremated. Ashes
interred in Trinity Church cemetery, Yercaud, Salem District, Tamil Nadu. Further He also found a Tool at Attrambakkam Nallah
/ canal in September 1863. 
There
are 16 Palaeolithic Caves / rock shelters
in Allikuli Hills range around
Poondi, comprising both Rock Shelters and open air sites were identified, of
which 14 are not in accessible condition. These Palaeolithic rock shelter were
formed by the quartzite rock pebbles
encountered in the form of Conglomerate. As per the experts this place was
covered by the frozen ice million and millions of years ago. Systematic
Palaeolithic studies in this region indicates that suggests the extensive
movement of early Hominids across the landscape more than a lakh years ago.
