The
visit to this Sri Sivalingeshwarar Temple at Sivalingapuram in Korattur was a part of the Shiva, Vishnu, and
Amman Temples Visit at Padi, Korattur, and Madhavaram on 06th
February 2022. This Temple is on the way to Sri Kanthalingeswarar Temple from
Korattur Railway station. There are many Pallava / Chozha period Shiva Lingas
unearthed during recent years from Padi to Korattur. This visit was aimed at seeing such old Shiva Temples / Shiva Lingas.

This
temple faces east with a balipeedam and Rishabam. Moolavar is on a round
avudayar. Ambal Sivasankari is in the same sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar temple
is on the left side. The Sanctum Sanctorum is an asbestos shed without any
formal Temple structure.
HISTORY
& INSCRIPTIONS
It
was told that this Shiva Linga and Rishabam are retrieved for the well. Before
the Shiva Linga retrieval, the people around the area suffered hardship. They
found comfort after constructing a
small shed where the Shiva Linga was installed. A new Ambal was also installed
in the same sanctum facing south. A
person named Sundaram is responsible for retrieving and installation of the
Shiva Linga. He is also taking care of this temple.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that this Shiva Linga was installed and worshiped by Korakka
Siddhar. Since Korakkar Siddhar worshiped
Lord Shiva of this temple, this place was called Korakka Oor which later
got corrupted to the present name of Korattur.
