The
visit to this Sri Yetteeswarar Temple at
Mel Ayanambakkam was a part of the Shiva Temples and Jain’s Sculptures visit planned on 30th January
2022, after lifting the COVID-19, Sunday Lockdown. Even though this temple was not included in
the list while searching Google Maps
for the Mahaveerar Sculpture at Mel Ayanambakkam. This temple is on the next
street to the Mahavirar Sculpture, so decided to visit this temple.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple faces east with an entrance from the south. A stucco image of Shiva’s
family is on the top of the south side entrance. Balipeedam and Rishabam are on
the east side. A Jala is provided to see the Moolavar on the east side wall. Moolavar is of Swayambhu on a Square
Avudayar. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar
(immediately after the entrance), Chandikeswarar and a munivar’s jeeva
Samadhi are in the prakaram. Ambal is in a separate sannidhi in Ardha mandapam
facing south.
ARCHITECTURE
The
sanctum sanctorum is very much similar to the Tiruvaleeswarar Temple of Koyambedu, constructed with stone from adhistana to prastram, but completely whitewashed. The temple consists of
sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on
a pada bandha adhisthana with jagathy and
threepatta Kumuda. The Brahmakantha pilasters separate the Koshtams. There is
no murtis in the koshtam. The prastram is simple. No Vimana is above the
sanctum sanctorum. Kumbha panjaras are also between koshtams.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It
was said that the temple is more than 1000 years old, maybe 10th to 12th century Chozha period. There is no major
renovations were done and the original temple is kept as it is, but completely whitewashed.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that a Siddhar’s Jeeva Samadhi is in this temple, devotees pray to him for his siddhi.
Lord
Shiva of this temple is also called Thirupranthakeswarar, and the legend
is associated with the burning of Thiripuram with a single smile/laugh.
Devotees
pray to Lord Shiva and Ambal for Child boon and to be relieved from marriage obstacles.

CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from regular Poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosham and Maha
Shivaratri.
