கொற்றவை / ஓங்கூர் /Kotravai, Ongur, Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu

The Visit to these Kotravai and Thavvai sculptures was a part of the Ahimsa walk, conducted by the Tamil Jains, in July 2023. The Kotravai is installed on a pedestal and is under worship.

The Kotravai is in samabanga standing posture on a buffalo's head. She is with 8 hands holding Sankha, Chakra, Sword, Shield, Bow, arrow, and a lamp/bell. The left front hand is on the hip as Kadi hastam. Her Vahana Deer is shown behind her. She is wearing ornaments on the elongated earlobes, neck, and hands. A Marbu kachchu and dress below the hip are shown. A small knife is tied to the right side of her hip. There are two Devotees one is in nava kanda posture ( Cutting his head offering to Kotravai )  and the other person is in worshipping posture.  The Kotravai may belong to the Pallava period, maybe the 9th to 10th century CE.

JYESHTA DEVI / THAVVAI
The Thavvai or Jyeshta devi is with Manthan and Manthi. The sculpture is in highly eroded condition. The Thavvai has with big belly, big thighs, and breasts. She is wearing ornaments on the ears and neck. She is holding her crow flag on her right hand, which is faintly visible.
