Mosale Sri Chennakeshava & Shiva temple / Nageswara & Chennakeshava Temples / ಮೊಸಳೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ, Mosale, Hassan District, Karnataka.

The Visit to these Chennakeshava Swamy and Shri Nageswara Swami temples at Mosale, in Hassan District, Karnataka, was a part of “Karnataka State, Hoysala Period Shiva and temple’s visit”- between 28th - 30th July 2023, organised by தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் "திருக்கச்சி" FB Group. Both Maha Vishnu and Shiva Temples are built side by side as twin temples in the same complex.

Some of the salient features of this temple are ....
The temple is facing east. Moolavar Shri Chennakeshava is in standing posture, holding sankha and chakra in the upper hands and lotus flower in the lower right hand and mace in the left hand. Sridevi, Bhudevi and female attendees are on both sides. Garudan is on the pedestal in worshipping posture.

In Navaranga mandapam niches, Sri Lakshmi Narayana, Saraswati, Vishwaksena Ganapati, Vaishnava Devi, Maha Lakshmi and Yoga Narasimhar.



ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was built with chloritic schist, more commonly known as soapstone. Both temples are built in the same North Indian  style of architecture. The temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala / Sukhanasi / vestibule, Navaranga mandapa and a mukha mandapa. The mukha mandapa ceiling is decorated with lotus flower blossoming sculpture. Most of the pillars are of lathe turned with square base. The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape on a raised upanam. A 3 tala Vesara vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum.  A Hara with sculptures is around the vimanam and Navaranga mandapam. Maha Vishnu’s various forms and avatars are on the Vimanam and hara. The Mukha mandapam is open and supported with lathe turned pillars. On both sides of the Mukha mandapam is with provision for sitting and hand rails.

A Hoysala emblem of sala fighting with tiger is on the 2nd tala extended sukhanasi. The Vimana Sukha nasi is extended up to vestibule in the 1st Tala. A stone Kalasa is on the top of the Vimana.

In Navaranga mandapam Garuda, Keshava, Janardana, Venugopala, Madhava and Bhudevi, sculpture panels are in Chennakeshava Swami temple. The sculptor’s names are also inscribed below the panels.











HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that this temple belongs to 13th Century Hoysala dynasty, may be during Hoysala King, Veera Ballala-II. Inscription Tablets are installed on the side of the fence.  It was told that these Shiva and Maha Vishnu temples are built to bring peace between the Shaivites and Vaishnavites of this Village. This was done by a Tandanayaka of this region during Hoysala reign.


Dandanayaka - It was told this Dandanayaka who mediate between Shaivites and Vaishnavites to bring peace and constructed this Shiva and Vishnu Temple. ( Please refer Dr. Ravichandran's post about these images - )

Some of the salient features of this temple are....
This temple is also facing east next to Sri Chennakeshava Swami Temple. The Shivalinga in side sanctum sanctorum is on a square avudayar. A Rishabam is in front of sanctum sanctorum.

Durga Panel is on the Ceiling of the antarala / vestibule ( The eyes of Durga follows us when we move ). At the entrance of sanctum sanctorum top the makara thorana consists of Shiva, Parvati, Vinayagar and Karthikeya.

In navaranga mandapam niches, Saptamatrikas, Vinayagar, Chamundeeswari, Saraswati and Keshavan. The Chamundeeswari and Saraswati idols are stolen by miscrediants, few years before.

Sridevi, Bhudevi, Lakshmidevi, Gauri, Maheshvari, Brahma, and Sadashiva sculpture panels are in the outer wall of the temple. The sculptor’s names are inscribed below each panels. Many places the sculptures are fund unfinished.

This place is about 2 KM off from Mysore- Hassan Road, 12.8 KM from Hassan, 50 KM from Belur, 90 KM from Melkote, 99 KM from Mysore, 184 KM from Bangalore.
Nearest Railway station is Hassan.
