Sri Aadhi Varaha Perumal Temple, வராகப்பெருமாள் கோயில், கும்பகோணம்/ Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Aadhi Varaha Perumal Temple was a part of the “Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit, in and around Kumbakonam”, on 13th July 2024.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with an entrance arch with stucco images of Maha Vishnu as Varahar & Thayar are sitting on the left lap of Varahar in anjali hasta, and Brahma, Shiva, and Garudan are on the top of the entrance to the temple. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam, and Garudan are under a mandapam in front of the temple.

Thayar Ambujavalli is in a separate sannidhi in sitting posture with abhaya varada hastam.



ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, plain mandi, palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with Bhuta ganas, kapotam with nasikudus and Viyyalavari. The temple was built with stone from Adhistanam to Prastaram. The superstructure above the Bhumi Desam was built with bricks. One Tala, Greevam and Vesara sigaram is on the bhumidesam. Stucco images of Maha Vishnu, Narasimhar, Narayanar, and various forms of Maha Vishnu are on the tala and greeva kostams.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may be 700 to 800 years old and may have been built during the end of the Chozha period. No inscription was found to prove its antiquity.  

Maha Samprokshanam was conducted on 26th October 2015.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, the Demon Hiranyaksha took Bhumadevi, deep inside the earth. Bhumadevi Prayed maha Vishnu to rescue her. Maha Vishnu took the Varaha avatar, dug the earth with his nose, and brought her back. Hence Maha Vishnu of this temple is called Adhi Varaha Perumal Temple.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, the annual festival with car procession will be in April.

This Adhi Varaha Perumal Temple is one of the 5 Maha Vishnu Temples that participates in the Mahamaham Theerthavari festival, which occurs once every 12 Years. In addition to the 5 Maha Vishnu temples, 12 Shiva temples of Kumbakonam also join in the Mahamaham festival.

This Sri Aadhi Varaha Perumal Temple is on P Shunmugam Road, in Valayapettai Agraharam, a part of Kumbakonam City.
The temple is about 2.5 KM from Kumbakonam Bus Stand, 3.2 KM from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 36 KM from Mayiladuthurai, and 38 KM from Thanjavur.
Nearest Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
