Sri Nandhinatha Perumal Temple, நந்தி வழிபட்ட பெருமாள் கோயில், Nandhivanam, Melakorukkai, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Nandhinatha Perumal Temple at Nandhivanam near Melakorukkai was a part of the “Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit, in and around Kumbakonam”, on 13^th July 2024. This place Nandhivanam is called Nandhivanam, Nandhipura Vinnagaram, and Nandhi Gramam.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The temple is facing east with a Mottai gopuram. Thumbikai Alwar, Vishwaksenar, and Ramanujar are in front of the temple. Stucco images of Maha Vishnu with his consorts are on the top of the maha mandapam. In Sanctum Sanctorum Sri Nandhinatha Perumal is with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Utsavars are in front of Moolavar.

Thayar is in a separate temple like Sannidhi facing east on the north side of the main temple. Thayar is sitting in a posture with abhaya varada hastam. Anjaneyar is also in a separate Sannidhi facing south on the right side, after the entrance.   

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and a mukha/maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a upanam (Kapota bandha upanam) and pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, threepatta kumudam, and Pattikai The Bhitti starts with Vedikai. The koshtas are in sala style as padra salas (protruding outside) with Padma jagathy, kadaka kumudam, and kapotam. The pilasters are of Vrutha pilasters with square bases & Naga bandham, kalasam, kudam, lotus petals mandi, palakai, and pushpa pothyal.   The prastaram consists of valapi, kapotam with nasikudus and Viyyalavari. The Vimanam above the prastaram was built with bricks, one tala, greevam, and sigaram in Dravida. Maha Vishnu’s various forms and Nandhi are on the tala and greeva kostams.   

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The temple is believed to belong to the early Chozhas, expanded by the latter Chozhas, Vijayanagara Nayakas, and Marathas.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam (maha samprokshanam) was conducted on 24^th June 2010.

இதன் அருகில் தான் நாதன் கோயில் என்ற நந்திபுர விண்ணகரம் உள்ளது. நந்தி புரம் இரண்டாம் நந்திவர்மனால் உருவாக்கப் பட்டது. திருமங்கையாழ்வார் இரண்டாம் நந்திவர்மன் அவன் மகன் தந்திவர்மன் சமகாலத்தவர். காஞ்சிபுரம் வைகுண்ட பெருமாள் கோயில் திருவல்லிக்கேணி பார்த்தசாரதி கோயில் திருப்பணி செய்தவன். அவனுக்கு வைரமேகம் என்ற பெயரும் உண்டு.‌ அவனைத் திருமங்கையாழ்வார் புகழ்ந்து வைகுண்ட நாதர் திருவல்லிக்கேணி நாதன் கோயில் மங்களாசாசனம் செய்துள்ளார்.‌ திருக்கண்டியூர் திருக் கண்ணமங்கை சிதம்பரம் திருநின்றவூர் குடந்தை கீழ்க்கோட்டம் போல் ஒரு நிகழ்ச்சி சைவ வைணவ நாயன்மார்களால் ஆழ்வார்களால் பாடல் பெறப் பட்டுள்ளது. குடந்தை நாகேசுவரர் சூரியன் ஜலந்தராசுரானால் ஒலி மழுங்கி சிவபிரானைத் தொழுது சிறப்பு பெற்றது.‌குடந்தை சக்கரபாணி சூரியனை மறைத்த ஜலந்தாசுரனைத் திருமால் தன் படைக்கலம் சுதர்சன சக்கரத்தில் ஆவிர்பத்து ஜலந்தராசுரனை அழித்து மீட்டதாக ஸ்தல புராணம் கூறுகிறது. மேற்கொறுக்கை நந்தி புரம் பழையாறை இன்னும் ஆய்வு செய்ய வேண்டியுள்ளது

LEGENDS

The Shiva Gana's leader Nandhiyam Peruman worshipped Maha Vishnu of this temple to get rid of the sin, for objecting the entry to Kailash.

Agasthiyar, Kamadhenu’s daughters worshipped Maha Vishnu at this temple. Maha Lakshmi also did penance to get married to Srimad Narayana in this place.  

This is the place where the Nandhiyavattai flower was originated.

Apart from oru kala pooja special poojas are conducted on Vaikunta Ekadasi, Krishnar Jayanthai, Navaratri, etc.

This is a Swati Nakshatra Temple. Devotees born on Swati nakshatra days worship Perumal for mental peace, to get relief from marriage obstacles, child boon, business development, etc.
