The visit to this Sri Thondala Swamy Temple at Thondamanadu, near Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh, was a part of “Shiva & Vishnu Temple and Hero stones Visit” near Srikalahasti, on 07^th July 2024. This place Thondamanadu, obtained the name of the King Thondalaman, who ruled this region.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….

The remains of the 11^th to 12^th century Chozha period Shiva temple was only the Shiva Linga banam. The Shiva Linga banam was installed with a new Avudayar, Rishabam, and a balipeedam.

ARCHITECTURE

Even though the Shiva Linga belongs to 11- 12^th century, no trace of the old structure was found. A Meta colour Sheet shed was provided.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

The Original Linga banam belongs to 11-12^th century. A Sundara Pandyan’s period inscription stone slab was found near the abandoned Shiva Lingam. A Metacolour Sheet Shed was provided and worship was started through Coimbatore “Aran Arapani Arakattalai”.

The Sundara Pandya’s 11^th reign year inscription records the place as Thiruvenkada Kottathu ARRur Nattu ThoNdamanaRRur. Shiva was called Thondala Swamy. Without knowing the Shiva’s original name, the local people called Shiva as Thirikala Gnaneswarar. The inscription is inscribed on both sides and reads as….

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS

Oru kala pooja was conducted by the Villagers. No special poojas are conducted. It was said that, during ancient times, the celebration would start after doing pooja to this petroglyph  Rishabam with Asthara Thevar.
