Sri Thirumazhisai Azhwar Temple ( Jeeva Samadhi ) / ஶ்ரீ.திருமழிசை ஆழ்வார் கோவில் (ஜீவ சமாதி), Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Sri Thirumizhisai Azhwar Temple in Kumbakonam was a part of the “Shiva, Vishnu and Amman Temples Visit, in and around Kumbakonam”, on 13th July 2024. This temple is on "saththaarath theru" named after Thirumazhisai Alwar himself as he was the "saathaatha iyengar".

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
This temple is facing east with an entrance mandapam. Stucco images of Thiruman, Shankha, Chakra, Garuda, and Anjaneyar are on the top of the entrance. In the sanctum, Thirumizhisai Alwar is sitting in Anjali hastam.

Sri Padmavathy Thayar Sannidhi is on the south side of the main temple. Thayar is in sitting posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The temple is about 3 feet above the Ground level with 7 steps. The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam and pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, plain mandi, palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi with lotus petals, kapotam with nasi kudus, and Viyyalavari. The temple was built with stone from Adhistanam to prastaram. The superstructure above the Bhumi Desam was built with bricks. Greevam and Vesara sigaram is on the bhumidesam. Stucco images of Maha Vishnu, Narasumhar, and Narayanar with his consorts are on the Greeva kostams.







The Corridor from the entrance to the temple mandapam is supported by Vrudha pillars with vettu porthyals.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may be 500 to 600 years old. As per the display banner, Thirumizhisai Alwar temple belongs to a Private body and an ancient Vishnu temple. The display banner at the temple warns that Thirumizhisai Alwar is not a Sivavakkiyar, this is not a Siddhar peedam, and do not believe the rumors.  19th to 20th Century inscriptions are found on the adhistanam three patta kumudam.

Brief History of Thirumizhai Alwar… He is the 4th Alwar of 12 Alvars of Vainavism. Since not many details are available, the experts believe that he may belong to 4203 BCE – 297 CE. He was born to Bargava Maharishi at Thirumizhisai, near Chennai in the present Tiruvallur District. Devotees believe that he is the incarnation of Sri Chakkarathalwar.

At the age of 8, learned all the sastras. He used to meditate on Sriman Narayanan. During his pilgrimage Yathra, he composed composed, Pasuram on Srangapani- as “Nadantha kalkal Nonthavo- நடந்த கால்கள் நொந்தவோ”.   

நடந்த கால்கள் நொந்தவோ? நடுங்க ஞாலம் ஏனமாய்
இடந்த மெய் குலுங்கவோ? இலங்கு மால் வரைச் சுரம்
கடந்த கால் பரந்த காவிரிக் கரைக் குடந்தையுள்
கிடந்தவாறு எழுந்திருந்து பேசு வாழி கேசனே  (61)

In Nalayira Diva Prabandham, He has sung Thiruchantha Vruththam, Nanmugan, Thiruvanthathi, etc. His temple is at Kumbakonam, Sathara Street 700 Svasthsaram, in Nithya Yoga posture.

Ashtabandhana samprokshanam ( kumbhabhishekam ) was performed on 24th October 1999 and again on 02nd November 2015.

This Sri Thirumizhisai Alwar Temple is on Saththara Street, in Valayapettai Agraharam, a part of Kumbakonam.
This temple is very near to Sri Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, 2.5 KM from Kumbakonnam Bus Stand, 3.2 KM from Kumbakonam Railway Station, 36 KM from Mayiladuthurai, and 38 KM from Thanjavur.
Nearest Railway Station is Kumbakonam.
