Adi Shankaracharya Birthplace Temple/ Adi Shankara Ashram, Kalady, Ernakulam District, Kerala

The visit to this Adi Shankaracharya Birthplace Temple at Kalady was a part of the Malai Nadu Divya Desams visit from 10th to 14th June 2025, organized by Mantra Yatra (website). Thanks to Mr. Balaji Davey and his team of Mantra Yatra for the excellent arrangement and personal care.

Adi Shankaracharya’s birthplace temple is on the banks of the Periyar (Poorna) River. A Shiva image with a waterfall on the back is in front of the entrance. Paintings and Adi Sankara’s stucco image are on the right side immediately after the entrance. The second level entrance is with a small Rajagopuram.

The temple complex faces south and consists of Sree Sakti Ganapati, Sree Sharadamba, Adi Shankara, and the Samadhi of Aryamba (Holy Mother of Sree Shankara).

Sree Saradhambal sannidhi, facing south, is on the left side of the mandapam. The sannidhi is in the form of a star shape with koshtas. Saptamatrikas are in the koshtams.

Adi Shankara’s Mother Aryamba’s Samadhi with a stone lamp stand is one step below Sree Saradhambal Sannidhi. The sad demise of Acharya’s mother and many continuing unpleasant events have appeared in history itself. The Brahmin families in the village refused to participate in the obituary ceremonies. Only two families were attending the rites out of the prominent 10 Brahmin families in the village. Those who were holding the head side of Acharya’s mother, later known to be Thalayattumpalli Mana, and the rest of her body, caught by the others, were famed to be Kappilli Mana. As a blessing from Acharya, now the temple affairs are under the control of these two Brahmin families.

Adi Sankara’s sannidhi, facing south, is on the right side of the mandapam. Adi Shankara’s life story paintings are in the mandapam.

Kalady Sringeri Mutt’s Jagadguru Sri Sachidananda Shivabhinava Narasimha Bharathi Swamigal, the 33rd Peetathipathi of the illustrious Sringeri guru parampara(..?), stucco image is in the center of the mandapam.
