The visit
to this Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, alias Kulasekha Alwar Temple at
Kodungallur, was a part of the Malai Nadu Divya Desams visit from 10th to
14th June 2025, organized by Mantra Yatra (website). Thanks to Mr. Balaji Davey and
his team of Mantra Yatra for the excellent arrangement and personal care.

This is one of the abimana sthalam of
Maha Vishnu. During our visit, the temple was under palalayam and preparing for
the Maha Samprokshanam.

Some of the salient
features of this temple are….
The temple faces east
with a three-tier Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam and Garudan are after the
Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar
Srinivasa Perumal is in a standing posture with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Utsavar is
with Sreedevi and Bhudevi, in front of the moolavar. In koshtam, Sugamuni with
Parrot face, Naradar, and Thumburu.
Vedavalli Thayar is in a
separate sannidhi in a standing posture.
In praharam, Andal,
Ramanujar, Alwars, Kulasekara Alwar, Manavala Mamunigal, Chakkarathalwar, and Narasimhar.
ARCHITECTURE
The whole temple was
built in Davidian architecture. It seems that the present temple was built
with brick and concrete. The sanctum sanctorum / Sree Kovil is square in
plan on an adhistanam. The two tala vesara vimanam is in the sanctum sanctorum.
Maha Vishnu’s various forms are on the vimanam.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is claimed that
this temple belongs to the 9th to 10th century. But no
evidences are found in this temple to prove its antiquity. The present
structure may belong to the 20th century.
LEGENDS
Thiruvanjikkalam, a
part of Kodungallur, is the birthplace of Sree Kulashekara. Sree Kulasekara
Azhwar was a very powerful king of the Chera Dynasty, and he was the founder of the
Later Chera Dynasty. He was also known as Kulasekara Varman and
Ramarajasekaran. He ruled between 800-820 CE. His daughter Ilai was also a
staunch devotee of the Lord. Like Sri Andal, Ilai merged with Lord Sri
Ranganatha at Sri Rangam. She is celebrated as Cherakulavalli Thayar. Once a
year, the serthi sevai of this Thayar with Sree Namperumal (utsavar at
Srirangam) is celebrated. Hence, Kulasekara Alwar has become the father-in-law
of Maha Vishnu.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONS
Poojas are done as
per the Pancharathra agama. Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted
on Ekadasi, Vishu, Vaikunta Ekadasi, etc.

The temple will be
kept open from 05.00 hrs to 10.30 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

Kodungallur is on the Panvel – Kochi – Kanyakumari Highway. 1 km from
Thiruvanjikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple, 6.6 km from Kodungallur Bhagavathy
Temple, 22 km from Payammal Sathrukana Swamy Temple, and 23 km from Sree
Koodalaimanikyam Temple, Inrinjalakuda.
The nearest Railway Station
is Irinjalakuda.
