Kariamonicka Perumal Temple / Kariyamanikka Perumal Temple / கரியமாணிக்க பெருமாள் கோயில் / Azhvar Koil/ஆழ்வார் கோயில், Kariamonickapuram, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari/ Kanniyakumari District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kariyamanikka Perumal Temple, at Kariyamanickapuram, Nagercoil was a part of the “Nanjil Nadu Heritage Walk”, organised by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department and தொண்டை மண்டல வரலாற்று ஆய்வு சங்கம் “திருக்கச்சி” from 16^th to 18^th May 2025. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr. Velu Pillai and Mrs. Radha Balan Ruth for organizing this Heritage Walk.

The Kariamonikka Perumal temple is also called Azhvar Koil / Kariya Manickathalwar.

Moolavar: Sri Kariamanikka Perumal

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..

The temple faces east with a Kerala-style mandapam. Balipeedam is in shobana mandapam. Nagar is in the ardha mandapam. Moolavar Sri Kariamonicka Perumal is in the sanctum, in a standing posture. Moolavar is holding Shankha and Chakra in the upper hands, the lower right hand is in varad hastam, and the left hand is in kadi hastam.

The original moolavar was found damaged and kept in the temple tanks, and a new Moolavar was replaced during the 15^th to 16^th Century.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to prastaram. The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. The adhistana is a pada bandha adhistana with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are Brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. The Dravida eka tala vimanam above the Bhumi desam was constructed with brick. Maha Vishnu, as yoga Narasimha and Brahma, are in the greeva koshtam.

The mahara toranas are bas-reliefs of Maha Vishnu’s various forms.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

This temple belongs to the 12^th to 13^th century Pandya period, and was later reconstructed during the Vijayanagara period.

It was said that the original moolavar was found damaged and kept in the temple tanks, and a new Moolavar was replaced during the 15^th to 16^th Century. Moolavar was called Kariya Manicka Vinnagar Emperuman.

கரியமாணிக்காழ்வார் கோயில் பிரகாரத் தெற்குப் பக்கச் சுவரில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 685, பொயு 1509 கல்வெட்டு செம்பி நாட்டுத் தத்தைப் பட்டினத்து அரங்கன் பெருமாள் என்பார் கரிய மாணிக்க விண்ணவர் எம்பெருமானுக்கு நித்த நிவந்தங்கள் நடத்துவதற்குக் கொடை அளித்ததைப் பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

The Kollam 685, 1509 CE inscription on the Kariyamanickalwar Temple prahara south side wall records the gift given to carry out the daily rituals by Arangan Perumal.

கரியமாணிக்காழ்வார் கோயில் முகமண்டபத்தின் கிழக்குப் பக்கச் சுவரில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 73(4), பொயு 1558 ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு, இடலாய்க்குடி நாயனார் கரியமாணிக்கவிண்ணகர் எம்பெருமான் கோயிலில் ஆண்டுதோறும் அம்பலத்தில் கீற்றுப் பந்தல் போடுவதற்கும் மாதத்தில் ஒவ்வொரு பதினான்காம் நாளிலும் கஞ்சி வார்ப்பதற்கும் அகத்தீச்சுரத்தில் ஒவ்வொரு அமாவாசை நாளிலும் பிராமணர்களுக்கு உணவளிப்பதற்கும் மங்கலச் சேரி மதிசூதனன் என்பான் நிலம் வழங்கியதைக் குறிக்கிறது.

The Kollam 73(4), 1558 CE inscription on the east side wall of mukha mandapam, records the gift of land to make the provision of a thatched roof annually, feeding kanji once in 14 days, and feeding to Brahmins at Agastheeswaram Temple, by the Mangalachery Madhisoothanan.

கரியமாணிக்காழ்வார் கோயில் முகமண்டபத்தின் கிழக்குப் பக்கச் சுவரில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 734, பொயு 1558 ஆண்டு கல்வெட்டு ஆதித்யவர்மன் சிறைவாய் மூத்தவர் என்னும் அரசர் முத்தலைக்குறிச்சியில் சிரி வீரகேரளேசுரத்துப் புதிய இடத்தில் எழுந்தருளியிருந்தபோது சில நிலங்களுக்கு வரிவிலக்கு அளித்ததையும் அந்நிலங்களை மங்கலச்சேரி மதிசூதனன் என்பான் இடலாய்க்குடி நாயனார் கரியமாணிக்கவிண்ணகர் எம்பெருமான் கோயிலில் ஆண்டுதோறும் அம்பலத்தில் கீற்றுப் பந்தல் போடுவதற்கும் மாதத்தில் ஒவ் வொரு பதினான்காம் நாளிலும் கஞ்சி வார்ப்பதற்கும் கொடையாக வழங்கியதைக் குறிக்கிறது.

The Kollam 734, 1558 CE inscription on the east side wall of the mukha mandapam records that when the king Adhityavarman Siraivai Moothavar was at Muththalaikurichi, exempting taxes on some lands. Mangalachery Madhisoothanan gave the tax-exempted lands to this temple for providing a thatched roof annually and feeding kanji once in 14 days.

கரியமாணிக்காழ்வார் கோயிலின் முகமண்டபத்துக் கிழக்குச் சுவரின் பட்டிகையில் உள்ள கொல்லம் 613, பொயு 1437 ஆம் ஆண்டு குலசேகர நம்பிராட்டியார் இடலாய்க்குடி கரியமாணிக்க விண்ணகர் எம்பெருமான் கோயிலில் திருப்பணி செய்வித்து, மஹாமண்டபம், படிக்கட்டுகள் ஆகியவை கட்டிவித்து குடமுழுக்கு செய்வித்ததை இக்கல்வெட்டு பதிவு செய்கின்றது.

The Kollam 613, 1437 CE inscription on the east side wall of the mukha mandapam, records the Thirupani, constructing the maha mandapam with steps, and kumbhabhishekam done by Kulaseka Nampiratiyar
