Durgai Amman Temple/ ஸ்ரீ துர்கை அம்மன் கோயில், Perumalpattu, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Durga Temple at Perumalpattu in Tiruvallur District was part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temple, Vishnu Temple and Durgai Amman Temple’s Visit, on 07th July 2026”. This place, Perumalpattu, is on the north banks of the river Cooum, and the temple is on the banks of Perumalpattu Lake. I was fortunate to attend the Maha Kumbhabhishekam.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east. Vinayagar and Nagar are under a peepal tree. Stucco images of Vinayagar, Durgai, and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar are on the top of the mukha mandapam / ardha mandapam. Vinayagar and Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar sannidhis are on either side of the sanctum sanctorum. Durga in the sanctum sanctorum is in a standing posture, holding shankha and Chakra in the upper hands, and the lower right hand is in Abhaya hastam, and the left hand is in kadi hastam. Utsavar is on the left side of Durgai. Durga’s various forms are in the koshtam. 








ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was constructed with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam / mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a pada bandha adhistanam with upanam, adhistanam with Jagathy, threepatta kumudam. The pilasters are of Brahma kantha pilasters with vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. The vimanam is of a 2-tier salakara vimanam. Amman’s various forms are in the tala and greeva koshtams.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is said that the temple is about 100 years old. The same was renovated, and Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 07th July 2026.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Durga is the incarnation of Mahishasuramardini, who killed buffalo head demon. It is further believed that Kotravai has transformed into Mahishasuramardini and again was transformed into Durga as a koshta image.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from oru kala poojas, special poojas are conducted on Fridays, Adi month Fridays, etc.

The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 09.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs

The place Perumalpattu is 1.5 km from Veppampattu Railway Station, 14 km from Tiruvallur, 15 km from Poonamallee, and 46 km from Arakonam.
The nearest Railway Station is Veppampattu, and the bigger one is Tiruvallur.
