HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is said that the original Gajaprishta vimana temple’s base was found
while excavating for this temple construction. The original temple was
constructed of bricks. It is said further that this was referred to the Archaeology
Department and indicated that the original temple may belong to the Pallava
period.
The present structure was built in recent years on the same original
brick foundation. Jeernaodharana Ashta bandhana Maha Kumbhabhishekam was
conducted on 15th September 2024.
LEGENDS
Brahma, with 5 heads, was so proud that he was more
powerful than Lord Shiva. In addition to that, Ma Parvati also got confused
many times and requested Lord Shiva to give a solution for the same. Lord
Shiva took the form of Vadugu Bhairava and plucked one of the 5 heads. Brahma
realised his mistake and prayed to Lord Shiva to pardon him. Lord Shiva
pardoned him and blessed him with 4 heads. Since Lord Shiva plucked one head of
Brahma, Lord Shiva is called Brahmasirakanteeswarar or Thirukandeeswarar.
In another legend, when the Devas and Asuras churned the milk ocean to
get the amrit for immortal life. The Vasuki, as a rope to churn the milk ocean, couldn’t bear the pain and vomited the poison. When the poison mixed with amrit,
Shiva took the amrit mixed with poison and started to drink. When it reached the throat, Ma Parvati kept her fingers on the throat and stopped the
poisoned amrit. The throat had changed to blue (நீலம்)
colour, and Shiva is called Thiruneelakandeswarar.
