Sri Kalahastiswarar Temple, ஶ்ரீ காளஹஸ்தீஸ்வரர் கோயில், செவ்வாப்பேட்டை/ Sevvapet, Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kalahasthiswarar Temple at Sevvapet was part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit, in Tiruvallur District” on 12th April 2026.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east, with an entrance from the south, the old entrance. Dwajasthambam, Balipeedam, and Rishabam are on the east side of the temple. Dwarapalakas are at the east side entrance. Vinayagar and Murugan are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Utsavars are in the antarala. Moolavar is on a round avudaiyar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai.

In the praharam, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Navagrahas, Bairavar, Nagars with Vinayagar, and Anjaneyar.

Ambal is in a separate shrine that faces south in the ardha mandapam. Ambal is in a standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.





 Arumugar has 6 heads and 12 hands


ARCHITECTURE
The total temple was constructed with cement concrete. The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala / ardha mandapam, and an open mukha mandapam. The temple was constructed in a Gajaprishta Vimana style from greevam to sigaram. The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape on an upanam and adhistanam with Jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The bhitti starts from pattikai without vedikai. The pilasters are of Brahmakantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, palakai, and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam with nasi kudus. The vimanam above the prastaram is with one tala, greevam, and sigaram. Stucco images of  Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtams.





HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It was said that the Shiva Lingam was worshipped under a thatched shed, without any formal structure. Thinking that a Pallava-period, i.e., 8th- to 9th-century Shiva Temple existed in the same place, the new temple was constructed in the Gajaprishta Vimana Style. Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted recently.

The temple had both dry and wet lands, and details are inscribed on the entrance wall, with survey numbers. It is said that efforts are underway to retrieve the lands. The inscription records as follows…

The trust deed for the administration of this temple is registered at the Tiruvellore Sub-Registrar’s office on the 10th October 1907. As document No 2514.

Another Telugu and Tamil inscription records the endowment of  a Choultry, run by the Arcot Cotah Kothandaraswamy Naidoo’s Charity Choultry, Sevvapet.

Properties described in a deed of trust executed by Cotah Yetherajooloo Naidoo in favour of Cotah Yetherajooloo Naidoo, Cotah Varadappa Naidoo, Janapala GajapathyRamaswamy Naidoo, and Motharapa Venucopaul Naidoo, as Trustees, bearing 16th September 1914 and registered in the office of the Registrar of Madras and Chincleput as No. 2551 in book -1, Volume 565, pages 231 to 234 on the 18th September 1914.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Pournami, Amavasya, Kiruthigai, Sankadahara Chaturthi, Panguni uthiram with thirukalyana utsavam, Thaipoosam, etc.
