HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
Since this temple is
considered a Thevara Vaipu sthalam, the temple might have existed
during the Thirugnanasambandar period. The Chandikeswarar belongs to the Chola period, 10th-11th century. The temple was reconstructed during recent
years, and the Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 06th February 2012 and on 07th July 2025.
LEGENDS
It is believed that Shiva of this temple
was worshipped by the siddhars in the form of snakes (kala). The Shiva might
have obtained the name of Kalatheeswarar due to this. Hence, this temple is a
parihara sthalam for Rahu and Ketu.
In another legend, this
place receives water from the Kosasthalaiyar River, and paddy is cultivated throughout the year. As a result, paddy was stored in the kalams (places for drying paddy) around the temple. Hence, Shiva obtained the name of Ner Kalatheeswarar, and why the name was
changed as Kalatheeswarar is not known.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular
poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Kiruthigai, Amavasya days,
Vinayagar Chaturthi, Fridays, etc.
TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept
open from 07.00 hrs to 10.00 hrs and from 17.00 hrs to 19.00 hrs.
