HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
It was said that the
temple is more than 1800 years old, and there is evidence has been found. The present
structure my belongs to the 20th Century. From the iconography of the Vannimara
Vinayagar (with a beautiful pathakkam on the makuda), two Rishabams and the
Moolavar, the temple may be 300 to 400 years old.
The lands around the
temple belonged to this temple once, but now they have been encroached. The present
temple tank was not excavated for this purpose. The encroachers excavated the
earth and made it as a pit. The trustees utilised it, and steps were constructed to make it a Temple tank.
There is an interesting
history behind the Nairuthy Lingam in the praharam. About 20 years before, Shiva
identified himself that he is in the in the Sriram Fibres Limited’s tank, through
a dream of an Anglo Indian. The next day, when the temple authorities searched and found the Shiva Linga
banam. The same was brought and installed in this temple.
