The list of Shiva temples in and around Kanchipuram with links to Google Photos, Location links on Google Maps, and Location QR Codes is already posted in this blog. The visit to the above Temples on the banks of Sarva Theertham Kulam was a part of the 2020 Maha Shivaratri Temples Visit, on 21^st February 2020. This Sri Kameswarar Temple is on the western banks of Sarva Thirtham Kulam, spread over 20 cents of land.

The 18^th Century saint Sri Sivagnana Swamigal had written the sthala purana of this temple in Kanchi Puranam, under Sarva Theertha padalam.

46. சர்வ தீர்த்தப்படலம் (1619 - 1644)

1619   இருட்கொடும் பிறவி மாற்றும் இலகுளீச் சரமீ றாகத்

      தருக்கறு காட்சி யோகா சாரியர் தளிகள் சொற்றாம்

      மருத்துத மலர்மேற் பூத்த வளம்புனல் குடைவோர் தங்கள்

      கருத்தவிர் சருவ தீர்த்தக் கரைபொலி தலங்கள் சொல்வாம்  

1620 காமேச்சரம்

      குடவளை அலறி ஈன்ற குரூஉமணித் தரளக் குப்பைப்

      படலைவெண் ணிலவு கான்று படரிருள் இரிப்ப ஞாங்கர்

      உடைதிரை ஒதுக்கந் தெண்ணீர் ஒலிபுனற் சருவ தீர்த்தத்

      தடநெடுங் கரையிற் காமேச் சரெமனுந் தலமொன் றுண்டால்  

1621   கருப்புவில் குழைய வாங்கிக் கடிமலர்ப் பகழி தூண்டும்

      அருப்பிளங் கொங்கைச் சேனை அடல்வலிக் காமன் முன்னாள்

      மருப்பொதி இதழிக் கோமான் மனத்திடைப் பிறந்தான் ஐயன்

      திருப்பதம் இறைஞ்சிப் போற்றி செய்துமற் றிதனை வேண்டும்

1622   மகப்பயில் பிறவிக் கேது வாகிவண் புணர்ப்பு நல்கி

      இகப்பில்சீ ரிரதிக் கென்றும் இனியனாய்க் கொடுப்போர் கொள்வோர்

      அகத்திருந் தினைய செய்கை ஆற்றியென் னாணை மூன்று

      சகத்தினுஞ் செலுத்தும் பேறு தந்தருள் என்னக் கேட்டு  

1623   மற்றெமக் கினிய மூதூர் வளம்பயில் காஞ்சி அங்கண்

      உற்றெமை வழிபட் டேத்தி ஊங்குவை பெறுகென் றெங்கோன்

      சொற்றலும் விரைந்து காஞ்சித் தொன்னகர் எய்திக் காமன்

      அற்றமில் சருவ தீர்த்தத் தடந்திரை அலைக்குங் கோட்டின்

1624   தவாதபே ரன்பிற் காமேச் சரன்றனை யிருத்திப் போற்றி

      உவாமதி முகத்து மென்றோள் ஒள்ளிழை உமையாள் தன்னை

      கவான்மிசைக் கொண்ட பெம்மான் கண்ணருள் கிடைத்து நெஞ்சத்

      தவாவிய பேறு முற்றும் அந்நிலை எய்தி னானால்

1625   ஏதமில் உயிர்கள் எல்லாந் தோற்றுதற் கேது வாகிக்

      கோதறத் தானம் ஈவோன் கொள்பவன் தானுந் தானாய்

      மேதகும் இறைமை பெற்று விளங்கினான் மறையோர் ஏற்கும்

      போதுளத் தவனை எண்ணிற் புரைதவிர்ந் துய்வா ரன்றே.  

Moolavar : Sri Kameswarar

Some of the Salient features of this temple are...

The temple faces east with an entrance arch on the east side. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in the mukha mandapam. Moolavar is of 16 flat surfaced Dhara Linga on a Padma Avudaiyar. There are no koshta images, and it was said that they were stolen away.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS

It is believed that the original temple was constructed during the 8th Century Pallava period and later renovated during the Vijayanagara period. 

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 29th January 2022, along with Sri Hiranyeswarar and Sri Kashi Viwanathar temples. In connection with the Maha Kumbhabhishekam, major renovations were carried out, which included rectification of the vimana, the addition of a stucco image of Hiranya worshipping Shiva, construction of parivara sannidhis like Vinayagar, Chandikeswarar, and Rishaba mandapa. 

ARCHITECTURE

The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapa, maha mandapa, and mukha mandapa. The sanctum sanctorum was built with granite stones from adhistanam to prastaram. A two tier vesara vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.   

LEGEND:

It is believed that Manmathan, also called Kaman, installed this Shiva Linga after he was burnt out by Shiva for shooting a flower arrow when Shiva was under deep meditation. To get rid of the sin he came along with Rathi, installed a Shiva Linga, and worshipped. Hence, Lord Shiva of this temple was called Kama Eswarar or the Kameswarar. Devotees worship Shiva to achieve success in all his end-overs / ventures and to get a good result.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Maha Shivaratri, pradosham, etc.

Since oru kala pooja is conducted, the opening and closing times are unpredictable.  

HOW TO REACH:

This temple is on the bank of Sarva Theertham Kulam and Kanchipuram to Vellore Road.

About 2.4 km from Kanchipuram Bus Stand, 2.0 km from Kanchipuram Railway Station, 27 km from Arakkonam Railway Junction, and 75 km from Chennai Central Station.

The nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram, and the Railway Junction is Arakkonam.
