LEGENDS
Lord Shiva gave darshan to King Rajendra Chozhan in the form of a golden Udumbu (உடும்பு  = a Monitor Lizard). (There is a story of Jackfruit sent to Chozhas Capital before this Legend ).

As per the legend, once the king tried to catch a golden Monitor lizard / Udumbu. However, it ran into an anthill. Before it went completely, the King caught hold of the tail. The monitor Lizard was nothing but Lord Shiva and was called Puttridam Kondar. While catching the tail, it got hurt and a scar can be seen even now on the tail-shaped Shiva Linga. Hence Lord Shiva is called Paarathazhumbar பாரத்தழும்பர் ) also called Udumbeesar.

After Murugan killed Surapadman, married Devasena. On that occasion,  Indra asked Murugan to sit on his white elephant Iravatham in the presence of Thirumal. Also, it is to be noted that the elephant was his vahana before Peacock.

Agasthiyar and the two Demons/ asuras called Maaharan & Maalayan worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.
