LEGEND
It is believed that this temple was constructed and Lord Shiva by Bhuta ganas ( During the process of Dancing, Lord Shiva’s dress got disturbed. On seeing that, the Bhuta Ganas laughed at Lord Shiva. So Lord Shiva, as Rudra ordered/cursed to leave Kailash. To get rid of the curse, the Bhuta Ganas came to this place, took a bath in the Adhiseshan tank, and worshiped Lord Shiva and   Rishis/Munis. This sthala purana is in the form of bas-relief on the pillars and ceiling. Dakshinamurthy was also worshiped by two Rishis.

Ambal temple is on the left side of the Moolavar and faces the same direction, hence it is considered as Arthanareeswarar form.
