HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
It is believed that the temple is more than 600 years old, built during the 14th to 15th centuries. The temple was reconstructed during the Vijayanagara period. It is also believed that Moolavar was installed by Adi Sankara.

The front 5 Tier Rajagopuram was built at 15.1 lakhs, and the amount was shared by 8 villages. Maha Kumbabishekam was conducted on 15th Dec 2019.

LEGEND
It was learned that Bhairavas (Dogs) will enter into the sanctum and come out as soon as the sanctum is opened.

During ancient times, the Buddhist Kings converted the Thondai mandalam and Thondakarunyam forests into habitation places and ruled. They established a school in this place, and students from northern India also came to study. During the 3rd century CE, the Heema Seethana King period, the Jain scholar Asulangar called the Buddhist and won over the debate. The Buddhists were chased out of the Kingdom. The Jains started Jain schools. During this period, this place was called “Aravazhithangi”. After Pallavas and Chozhas came to power, they gave importance to Saivite temples

About 600 years ago, i.e., in the 14th Century, a King called Veera Veera Sambuvarayar, built a Fort in this area and ruled. The Yadavaraya, who came from the north, fought with Veera Veera Sambuvarayar.  He was worried about the diminishing number of his soldiers on the first day. In the night, Kala Bhairava came in his dream and said that he would stand by his side to win the war. The next day, he won over Yadavaraya. Since Bhairava helped to win the war and saved his warriors, he named this place “Azhipadaithanki”. He also built a temple for Kala Bhairavar.  This sthala Purana is also referred to as Thiruvothur Sthala Purana.

It is believed that one can get relieved from Shani dosha, debt,  black magic/billy sunyam, diseases caused through Karmas, relieved ashta poverty, and increase wealth, win court cases, stay gold, get rid of jealousy, and get rid of obstacles caused by the enemies,  by worshiping Sri Swarna kala Bhairavar. This temple is believed to be equivalent to Kasi.
