Sri Thirukanneeshwarar Temple/ திருக்கண்ணீஷ்வரர் கோவில், ஆக்கூர் / Akkur, Thiruvannamalai District, Tamil Nadu.

The Visit to this Thirukanneeshwarar Shiva temple at Akkur was a part of the visit to the Temples and heritage sites around Kanchipuram, scheduled on 10th July 2021.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…..
The temple faces east with an entrance mottai gopuram ( only base without superstructure) on the South side. Vinayagar and Murugan are on both sides of the entrance mottai gopuram. Balipeedam and Nandi are in front of the east side Wall with a Jala. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. In prakaram A Shiva linga with Nandi is in front, Chandikeswarar. Subramaniyar, Navagrahas and Vahanas are in the mukha mandapam.  Ambal is in a separate sannadhi on the right side of the moolavar sannidhi facing the south entrance.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala, artha mandapam  and mukha mandapam.  The adhisthana is of pada bandha adhisthana with three patta kumuda. From adhisthana to prastaram sanctum was built with stone. The Nagara-style Vimana is above the Bhoomi desam. No stucco images were found on the Vimanam.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
There are no inscriptions found in this temple, based on the architecture and the sculpture on the pillar the temple may belong to the 15th to 16th Century CE.

As per the inscription of a Lakshminarayana temple, in the Village - 12th to 13th Century CE Chozha period inscriptions are found on the adhisthana.  According to the archaeologists Akkur Village originally comprised six hamlets – Samburanatham, Singili Pattarai, Thatha Pattarai, Dhaneswaran Modu, Purangavasam, and Srinivasapuram. Later it was named Akkur.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham and Maha Shivaratri days.

Since oru kala Pooja is conducted the opening and closing times are unpredictable.

Akkur is about 5 KM off Kanchipuram to Vandavasi Main road,  20 KM from Kanchipuram, 24 KM from Uthiramerur, 28 KM from Vandavasi, 103 KM from Thiruvannamalai and 96 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway Station is Kanchipuram.
