The
Visit to this Sri Kariya Manicka Perumal temple was a part of the visit to the
Temples and heritage sites around Kanchipuram, scheduled on 10th
July 2021. After visiting Sri Agneeswarar Temple, we came to this Vishnu
Temple, which is in the midst of the Village, Kalakattur.
Moolavar : Sri Kariyamanicka Perumal
Thayar : Sri Maragatha Valli
Some
of the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple faces east with an entrance mottai Gopuram. Balipeedam, Deepa
Sthambam, and Garudan are immediately after the entrance. Moolavar with Saligrama garland is in a standing posture with Sridevi and Bhudevi. Madapalli and Thayar Sannidhi are in the
prakaram. Thayar is in sitting Posture with abhaya and varada hastam. Urchavars
Maha Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi, Thayar, and Kalinga Nardanar are in front
of Thayar. Alwars are in the Mukha mandapam facing north.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of Sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and a latter period Mukha
mandapam. The adhisthana is not constructed as per any architectural style. The
sanctum sanctorum from Adhisthana to prastaram was built with stone. A single-tier stucco Vesara Vimana is on the sanctum Sanctorum. Thayar sannidhi was built
in recent years. The main sanctum needs renovations since cracks are
observed on the walls and water leaks inside the Sanctum Sanctorum during rain.
HISTORY AND
INSCRIPTIONS
The
period of construction is not known and the pillar in the Madapalli is confusing
to decide the age of the temple Further it was told that two stone pillars are
taken to the Shiva temple from here. This present temple might be a
reconstructed one and considering the pillars, we may conclude that the temple
may be about 400 years old.
The
temple is under the control of the Tamil Nadu HR& CE Department.
POOJAS AND
CELEBRATIONS
Apart
from Oru kala pooja Special poojas are conducted on Vaikunta Ekadasi day and
