There are two Sri Santhaveli Amman Temples in Chinna
Velikadu and Periya Velikadu. The Small temple with a small Moolavar is believed
to be of the Elder Sister called Sri Sakthi Pasiamman, at Chinnavelikadu and the
Younger Sister Santhaveli Amman is inside the School, at Periyavelikadu, in-fact
the school might have been constructed later. These two temples are believed to be
of Kula Deivam and Periyavelikadu guarding deities. After attending a family
function, visited these temples on 23rd October
2024.

Some of the Salient features of this temple
are….
This temple faces North with a
balipeedam and a Simha Vahanam. Dwarapalaka is on the right and Dwarapalaki is
on the left side of the sanctum sanctorum. In Sanctum Sanctorum Sri
Sakthi Pasiamman is in sitting posture. Amman is with 4 hands holding Trishul, Pasa,
Damaru, and Akshayapatra.
The Temple tank is on the right side of the
temple.

HISTORY
The Dwarapalaka and Dwarapalaki images indicate
that the original temple may belong to the 16th to 17th Century.
Looks similar to the Kongu region's ancient temples.
The present structure was constructed in memory of Dharmapuram
in Chengalpattu District, late R. Kandaswamy Chettiar, and Angammal, of
Chinnavelikadu, by K Muthukrishna Chettiar, and M Rajammal of Chinnavelikadu,
through their own fund. Maha Kumbhabhishekam
was conducted on 12th February 1982.

Some of the salient features of this temple are…
This temple faces east. Sri Santhaveli Amman is
in a sitting posture with 4 hands. The upper hands are holding the Damaru and
Trishul and Akshaya Patra and a knife in the lower hands. There is a head-size
Amman with a snake’s hood in front of the moolavar.
A Vinayagar sannidhi and Murugan Sannidhi under
construction is at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. A kanthu is in front of
the sanctum Sanctorum. The pillars have the Ashta Lakshmi images (under
construction).
Some of the damaged idols of Amman, Maha Vishnu, and Ayyanar are kept as loose sculptures inside the temple premises. These idols
are recovered from the nearby tank.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of a Sanctum sanctorum, ardha
mandapam, and a maha mandapam. The Sanctum sanctorum was constructed in Gramiya
style and an Eka tala Vesara Vimana is above the sanctum sanctorum with maha
nasis and alpha nasis. The whole temple was constructed with bricks and cement
concrete.

Only oru kala poojas are conducted and no special
poojas are conducted on a regular basis.

Velikadi is
about 3 km of the Mudukarai to Koovathur Road. Can be reached from
Maduranthakam also ( 16 km), via Vilvarayanallur, Sirunallur, and
Chitravadi. 16.5 km from Kuvathur on
ECR, and 23 km from Melmaruvathur,
Nearest Railway Station is Maduranthakam.
