Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple / தேவபாறை ஸ்ரீ பாலதண்டாயுதபானி ஸ்வாமி கோயில், Mangalagudi/ Narasingam, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple at Narasingam, Madurai was a part of “Traditional Journey to Yanaimalai”, on 31st August 2025, organised by the Kumbakonam Heritage by Gopinath, and kumbakonamheritage.com. Thanks to Prof. Devi Arivu Selvam for leading our Heritage Journey with valuable inputs. Even though this is a relatively recent temple, the founder’s ancestors made significant contributions to the Sri Yoga Narasinga Perumal Temple, located just opposite this one.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 4 pillar mandapam. The Rajagopuram is of 5 tiers. The Navagrahas are located on the left side of the Rajagopuram. Veera Mahendran and Veerabhahu are on both sides of the maha mandapam. Vinayagar and Murugan are on both sides of the sanctum sanctorum. Balipeedam and Peacock vahanas are in front of the sanctum sanctorum. In the sanctum, Moolavar Sri Bala Dhandayuthapani is in a standing posture holding a thandam.

Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, and Utsava murti sannidhis are in the praharam.

Prathiyangira Devi and Ashta Bairavar temples are on the south side of Sri Balathandayuthapani Temple.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple was constructed on a rock surface. The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on pada bandha adhistanam, with jagathy, kumudam, and pattikai. No murtis found in the koshams. A two-tier vesara vimanam is in the sanctum sanctorum. Stucco images of Murugan, Dakshinamurthy are on the tala and greeva Koshtams.

Stone images of Brahma Sri Anthiya Rama Vidhyanatha Bagavathar, the founder of this temple, and his wife are on the maha mandapam pillars. The temple is being maintained as a private trust and managed by the descendants of the founder.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The temple was built in the 20th Century, by Brahma Sri Anthiya Rama Vidhyanatha Bagavathar. (May be a Sourashtra Brahmin) Sri Anthiya Vidhyanatha Thulasiramaiyyar was responsible for the management of this temple.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 2nd February, 2017. The drinking water facility was completed on 30th January 1991, and an office room building was built in 1969.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Brahma Sri Anthiya Rama Vidhyanatha Bagavathar was a Siddhar who constructed this temple. The Balathandayuthapani is very powerful, and devotees pray for a Child boon, to remove marriage obstacles, Brahmahathi dosha, problems in business, Family welfare, increase life, problems due to enemies, etc.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Thaipoosam, Panguni Uthiram, and followed by Thirukalyanam.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 12.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
This temple is on Devaparai, at Narasingam, just opposite to Yoga Narasimhar Rock Cut Cave Temple and west side of the Yanaimalai.
The temple is 7 km from Mattuthavani Bus Stand, 11 km from Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, 12 km from Madurai Railway Junction, and 30 km from Thirupparankundram.
The nearest Railway Station is Madurai.
