The visit to this Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple was
a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit”, on the banks of the Palar River.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 5-tier Rajagopuram.
Nagar and Thumbigai Alwar (Vinayagar) are in the Rajagopuram passage. Balipeedam, Dwajastham, and Garudan are after
the Rajagopuram. Dwarapalakas are at the entrance of the antarala. Moolavar Sri
Varadaraja Perumal is in a standing posture on a lotus pedestal and a turtle with
right hand in abhaya hastam and left hand on the mace. Mahalakshmi is on the
chest of Sri Varadaraja Perumal. A snake bas relief is on the ceiling. Utsavars
are in front of moolavar. No images found in the Deva koshtams.
In the praharam, Thayar temple, Rukmani, Venkada
Krishnar, Parthasarathy, Srinivasa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi,
Chakkarathawar with Narasimhar, Lakshmi Narasimhar, Andal Sannidhi, Paramapada
vassal, Anjaneyar, and Vahana mandapam with Alwars images.
Thayar Perundevi is in a separate temple that faces east
with sanctum sanctorum, antarala, and ardha mandapam. Thayar is in a sitting
posture with abhaya varada hastam.
The temple maintains a Gosala inside the temple, between Andal Temple and the Vahana mandapam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala,
ardha mandapam, and maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is rectangular in
shape, on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, vrudha kumudam, and pattikai.
The bhitti starts with vedikai. Kandam is between kumudam, pattikai, and
vedikai. The koshtas are only with the makara torana. Dancers with musicians are in
the torana. The prastaram consists of valapi and kapotam. The temple was
constructed with stone from adhistanam to prastaram. The 2 tier salakara
vimanam above the prastaram was constructed with bricks. Stucco images of Maha
Vishnu’s various avatars are on the tala and greeva koshtams.
The Srinivasa Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi
temple was constructed with salakara vimanam. The Parthasarathy temple was
built in Rekha Nagara, a North Indian style of architecture.
Sri Perundevi Thayar sannidhi was built with a sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam, and mukha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is
square in shape on a pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy and three patta
kumudam. A two-tier vesara vimanam is over the sanctum sanctorum.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple was reconstructed, and when it
was reconstructed is not known. Chozha period fragment inscriptions and Vijayanagara period are found
on the adhistana, jagathy, and kumudam. One of the inscriptions mentions that this
place was Arcot –ஆர்காடு. The temple may belong to the latter Pallava /early Chozha period.
The other sannidhis are built at a later date.
The inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp and the donation of saava moova peradu / ewes
LEGENDS
It is believed that Brahma did a Yagna at this
place. The 7 Maharishis / Siddhars, who are responsible for the creation of Shadyanya
kshetrams around Arcot, did penance and got the blessings of Sri Varadaraja
Perumal.
POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are
conducted on Vaikunda ekadasi, Puratasi Saturdays, Margazhi months, Rama
Navami, Krishnar Jayanthi, and on all Vaishnava function days.

The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to
11.00 hrs, and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is on the State Highway from Arcot to
Kalavai, Cheyyar, and Vandavasi.
The temple is about 750 meters from Arcot bus
stand, 8 km from Walajah Road Junction, 16 km
from Ranipet, 27 km from Vellore, 29 km from Arani, 30 km from Sholinghur, and
45 km from Kanchipuram.
