Sri Kailasanathar Temple/ Old - Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple / ஸ்ரீ கைலாச நாதர் கோயில், Arcot, Ranipet District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Kailasanathar Temple was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit”, on the banks of the Palar River. This temple is also called as “Old Kasi Viswanathar Temple”.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple faces east with a 3-tier (Rajagopuram is under construction above the mottai gopuram), Balipeedam, and Rishabam are in front of the Shiva Temple. Dwarapalakas are in the form of bas reliefs at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Vinayagar and Bala Murugan are on both sides of the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum. In the sanctum sanctorum, the  Shiva Lingam on a round avudayar. In koshtam Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, Brahma, and Durgai.

In the praharam, Ambal temple, Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar, Nagars, Veera Anjaneyar, Navagrahas, Nalvar, and Bairavar with a mustache.

Ambal is in a separate temple with sanctum sanctorum and ardha mandapam, on the left side of Shiva’s sannidhi. Ambal is in a standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
Both the Shiva and Ambal temples are constructed with bricks and have similar architectural features. Temples have with sanctum sanctorum and an ardha mandapam. The adhistanam is of pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The vinamam is of eka tala vesara vimanam. Shiva, Dhakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are in the greeva koshtams. Maha nasis are on the 4 cardinal directions of the sigaram.



The Bala Murugan shrine was constructed in the 6-faced dravida style from adhistanam to sigaram.


HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may be 200 to 300 years old. The Rajagopuram was only up to the base level, and construction of the 3 tiers is in progress.



LEGENDS
Stucco images of Shiva’s family in Mount Kailash are on the top of the mandapam. In addition to this, stucco images of Devas and Asuras churning the milkocean are also on the top of the mandapam. Hence, it is believed that worshipping Shiva of this temple is equivalent to worshiping Shiva at Mount Kailash.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Chaturthi, Thaipoosam, Karthigai, etc.

TEMPLE TIMINGS
The temple will be kept open from 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs, and from 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

HOW TO REACH
The temple is on the State Highway from Arcot to Kalavai, Cheyyar, and Vandavasi.
The temple is about 1.2 km from Arcot bus stand, 9 km from Walajah Road Junction, 17 km from Ranipet, 28 km from Vellore, 30 km from Arani, 31 km from Sholinghur, and 46 km from Kanchipuram.
The nearest Railway Station is Walajah Road Junction.
