Tamil Brahmi Inscriptions/ Inscriptions in Thamizhi (Tamil- Brahmi) Script, Yanaimalai/Anaimalai, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to the Thamizhi inscriptions with stone beds at Yanaimalai, Madurai, was a part of “Traditional Journey to Yanaimalai”, on 31^st August 2025, organised by the Kumbakonam Heritage by Gopinath, and kumbakonamheritage.com. Thanks to Prof. Devi Arivu Selvam for leading our Heritage Journey with valuable inputs.

As per the Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department, these inscriptions, belonging to the 1st Century CE, Brahmi script record the gift of these stone beds. 

Climbing on this hill is not so difficult, since steps are constructed with handrails. White arrow marks are also provided up to the natural cave.

In the middle of the hill, the Tamil Brahmi inscriptions are inscribed on the face of the natural cave. The rock above the inscriptions is cut horizontally, so that the rainwater will not enter the cave. There are some beds chiselled on the floor. Other than the Stone beds, no images are found.  

This 1st-century CE Tamil Brahmi inscription records that Eriadhan and Aththuvayi Arattakayiban established these beds for living/sleeping, on this Yanaimalai. The inscription records the Yanaimalai as Ivakundram (இவகுன்றம்- யானைமலை).

இவ குன்றத்தில் (யானை மலை) உறைவதற்காக இருப்பிடம் அமைத்தவன் எரிஆரிதன் அத்துவாயி அரட்டகாயிபன் என்று பொயு முதலாம் நூற்றாண்டு தமிழ் பிராமி கல்வெட்டு பதிவு செய்கின்றது. யானை மலையை இவகுன்றம் என்று குறிப்பிடுகின்றது. பா என்றால் படுக்கை என்று பொருள்.

The inscription reads as…

1. இவகுன்றத்தூ உறையுள் பா தந்தான் எரிஆரிதன்

2. அத்துவாயி அரட்ட காயிபன்
