The visit to Tirthankaras with Tamil
inscriptions, Yanaimalai, Mangalagudi, at Narasingam, Madurai, was a part of
“Traditional Journey to Yanaimalai”, on 31st August 2025, organised
by the Kumbakonam Heritage by Gopinath, and kumbakonamheritage.com. Thanks
to Prof. Devi Arivu Selvam for leading our Heritage Journey with
valuable inputs.
The
sculptures or bas-reliefs of Tirthankas belong to the 9th-10th century. The sculptures Mahaveerar, Parshvanathar (both sitting and standing postures), Bahubali with his Sisters,
and Ambika Yakshi are on the facade of the natural cave. In
addition to this group, there is a lone Tirthankara sculpture on the other
side of a big boulder. These Tirthankara sculptures are sculpted due to the effort of the Jain Monk Achchanandhi. The sculptures are applied with stucco and painted. The paintings can be seen on some of the Tirthankara sculptures. Inscriptions
are inscribed below the image of Tirthankaras. The inscription records the
names of the donors for sculpting the Tirthankara’s images.

பார்ஸ்வநாதரின் சிற்பத்தொகுப்பு அவருடைய முந்தைய பிறவியின் வரலாற்றை
மிகவும் நேர்த்தியாக செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. பார்ஸ்வநாதர் காயோத்சர்கமாக நின்ற
நிலையில் காணப்படுகின்றார். தரனேந்திரன் சர்பமாக பார்ஸ்வநாதரின் தலைமீது கமடனின்
துன்புறுத்தல்களில் இருந்து காக்க குடை பிடிக்க, அதற்கும்
மேலே பத்மாவதி தரனேந்திரனைக் காக்க வஜ்ரகுடை பிடித்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கின்றனர்.
இடதுபுறம் மேலே, பார்ஸ்வநாதர், முற்பிறவியில்
மறுபூதியாக பிறந்து தன் அண்ணன் கமடனால் (பாறாங்கல்லை தலை மீது போட்டு)
கொல்லப்பட்டதின் நிகழ்வை நினைவு கூறும் விதமாக செதுக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளது. கீழே இடது
புறத்தில் பார்ஸ்வநாதரின் காலருகே, கமடன் தன் எல்லா
முயற்சிகளும் தோல்வியில் முடிந்த நிலையில், சரணடைந்து
வணங்கும் நிலையில் காட்டப்பட்டுள்ளது.

களவழி நாட்டு அணியன் என்பவன் நினைவாக ஏனாதி நாடி என்பவன்
செய்வித்த திருமேனி என்று இக்கல்வெட்டு கூறுகின்றது.

தீர்த்தங்கரர், பரிவார புரவுவரியார் சிற்பங்களை அச்சநந்தி
செவித்தார். இதற்கு காவல் அளித்து ஆதரவு தந்தவர் நரசிங்க மங்கலத்து
ஊரவையினர் (சபையார்) என்று இக்கல்வெட்டு
கூறுகிறது.

செய்வித்ததையும் அதற்கு புரவுவரித்திணைக்களத்தார் ஆதரவளித்துக் காத்தல்
செய்ததையும் கல்வெட்டு கூறுகிறது.

These
Jain Sculptures are at Narasingam, about 150 meters from the Yoga Narasimhar
Rock Cut Cave Temple, and west side of the Yanaimalai.
The
temple is 7 km from Mattuthavani Bus Stand, 11 km from Sri Meenakshi Amman
Temple, 12 km from Madurai Railway Junction, and 30 km from Thirupparankundram.
The
nearest Railway Station is Madurai.
