The visit to Sri Immaiyilum Nanmai
Tharuvar Temple at Madurai was a part of “Traditional Journey to Yanaimalai”,
on 31st August 2025, organised by the Kumbakonam Heritage by Gopinath, and kumbakonamheritage.com.
This
Shiva temple is close to the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple and also one of the
Pancha Bhoota temples of Madurai (Prithvi - Land). The temple is also called Bhooloka Kailash.

Some
of the salient features of this temple are…
The
temple faces west with a small two-tier Rajagopuram. Dwajasthambam, balipeedam, and Rishabam are after the Rajagiopuram under a mandapam. Stucco dwarapalakas
are at the entrance of the maha mandapam. Rishabam with balipeedam is in front of
the sanctum sanctorum. Dwarapalakas, Vinayagar, and Sri Bala Dhandapani are at
the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is on a round avudaiyar facing
east, ie, Shiva and Parvati. Shiva and Parvati Idols /images are on the back
side of the Shiva Lingam in the sanctum sanctorum, faces west. In koshtam, Brahma,
Durgai, Lingothbavar, and Dakshinamurthy. Utsavars are in the ardha mandapam.
In
praharam, Chandikeswarar, Natarajar with Sivakami, Saraswati, Chandran, Suryan,
Jwara Lingam, Jwara Sakthi, Bairavar, and Maha Lakshmi. Vinayagar, Sri Valli
Devasena Subramaniar, and Ambal Sri Madhyapuri Amman, Thirupugazh Sabha are in
the outer praharam.
Ambal
Mathyapuri Amman is in a separate temple facing south. Dwarapalakis are at the
entrance of the sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in a standing posture holding a lotus
flower in the right hand, and her left hand is in dola hastam, similar to Meenakshi.
Vinayagar and Subramaniar are in the praharam. Since Ambal is at the centre of
Madurai city, she is called Madhyapuri Amman.
ARCHITECTURE
The
temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum, antarala, ardha mandapam, and maha
mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a kapota bandha adhistanam, with jagathy,
muppattai kumudam, pattikai, and kapotam. The pilasters are of Brahma kantha
pilasters with a square base, Kalasam, kudam, mandi, palakai, and Pushpa pothyal.
The vimana is of 2 talas, greevam and nagara sigaram.
HISTORY
AND INSCRIPTIONS
It
is believed that the original temple was built during 12-13th century
Pandya period, and later the temple was reconstructed during the Madurai Nayaka
period.
LEGENDS
It
is believed that Shiva will pardon the devotees and bless, for the sin done in
this birth itself. Hence, Shiva is called Immaiyilum Nanmai Tharuvar.
It
is believed that the Shiva Linga was worshipped by Shiva himself after the
marriage with Sri Meenakshi Amman and before taking charge of Madurai City as a
King. Hence, the devotees worship Shiva of this temple before taking Charge of
any Post/position. Shiva and Parvati are on the back side of the Shiva Lingam.

Apart from
regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri,
Vinayagar Chaturthi, Vaikasi Visakam, Thaipoosam, Kandar Sashti, Navaratri,
etc.
