The second visit
to this Sri Ayanadheeswarar Temple at Mel - Kil Ayanambakkam, Thiruverkadu, in Chennai
District, was a part of the 617th week abhishekam by the Ancient
Shiva Temples and Sivamayam Group on 30th August 2026.
The first visit to this Sri Ayanadheeswarar
Temple at Mel - Kil Ayanambakkam was a part of “Gajaprishta Vimana Temples Visit”, in
the Ayanambakkam area on 2nd November 2025. The temple was under construction during my
first visit.

Some of the salient features of this temple are.....
The temple faces east with a three-tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam
and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. Vinayagar and Murugan are after the
Rishabam. Dwarapalakas are on either side of the sanctum sanctorum. Moolavar is
on a round avudaiyar. In the koshtam, Thanvanthiri, Dakshinamoorthy with his
consort, Lingothbavar, Brahma, and Durgai with 18 hands.
In the praharam, Brahmi, Maheswari, Gaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani,
Chamundi, Vinayagar, Iyyappan, Anjaneyar (in sitting posture), Maha Vishnu,
Maha Lakshmi, Garudan, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Chandikeswarar,
Natarajar with Sivakami, Sarabeswatar, Kala Baitavar, Navagrahas, Saniswararan,
Chandran, and Suryan.
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi and faces South. Stucco Dwarapalakis are on either
side of the sanctum sanctorum. Ambal is in a standing posture with abhaya
varada hastam. In the koshtam, Chamundi, Saraswati, and Varahi.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple was built with stone in the Gajaprishta Vimana
style from upanam to prastaram. The temple consists of the sanctum sanctorum,
the ardha mandapam, and a maha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on an upanam
and pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam, and pattikai. The
bhitti starts with vedikai. The two-tier brick Gajaprishta vimanam is on the
bhumi desam. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu, and Brahma are on the tala and
greeva koshtams. Stucco images of Shiva and Amman’s various forms are on the
mandapam parapet wall.
HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Shiva Lingam and Ambal are under worship called
as Sri Ayanapureeswarar and Sri Vidhyambigai. Part of the land was encroached.
It is said that two Shiva devotees who carried out the poojas died
unfortunately, and after that nobody came forward to do the poojas.
In the meantime, Shiva went into the dream of a Tuticorin Devotee, who owns a salt pan, etc
to construct a temple at this place. He searched the place and finally
identified this Shiva temple. Nearly about 3 crores were spent on the construction
of this temple. After the construction of this temple, the names of Shiva and Ambal
were changed to Ayanadheeswarar and Akilandeswari.
The age of the Shiva Lingam is not known and is
believed to belong to the Pallava period. Considering the Thirumullaivayil
Shiva temple as a model, the new temple was constructed in Gajaprishta Vimana style.
Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted in April 2026.
LEGENDS
It is believed that this is one of the eight
temples built around the Sri Etteeswarar Temple of Ayanambakkam.

The temple is 5.0 km from Thiruverkadu
Karumariamman Temple, 6.0 km from Thiruverkadu Sri Vedapureeswarar Temple, and
9 km from Koyambedu Bus Terminus.
The nearest railway station is Ambatur Railway Station.
