Arulmigu Pasupatheeswarar Temple ( Aanilaiappar ) / அருள்மிகு பசுபதிஈசுவரர் திருக்கோயில் ( ஆனிலையப்பர் ), Vellarivalli / வெள்ளரிவெள்ளி, Salem District, Tamil Nadu.

The visit to this Sri Pasupatheeswarar Temple ( Aanilaiappar ) Temple at Vellarivalli was a part of “Shiva, Vishnu, Amman Temples and Heritage sites from Komarapalayam to Edappadi Visit” – On 19th May 2024. Thanks to ல மா செல்வராசு, one of my FB friends of Komarapalayam for taking me to all these places.

Some of the salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram. A deepa sthambam is infront of Rajagopuram. Stucco images of Shiva’s Kalyana Kolam on the top of the mukha mandapam. Balipeedam and Rishabam are infront of the temple. Stucco dwarapalakas are in front of the temple. Moolavar is little small on a round avudayar. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Ashta bhuja Durgai.

In praharam Shasra Lingam, 63var, Ammaiyappa- Shiva and Parvati as Rishabaroodar, Chandikeswarar, Vinayagar, Bairavar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Navagrahas, Saniswarar with his two wives, Chandran and Siriyan.
 
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi facing South. Ambal Karunambigai is in standing posture with abhaya varada hastam.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum sanctorum, antarala and ardha mandapam. The sanctum sanctorum is on a adhistanam. The temple was constructed with stone from adhistanam to prastaram with stone. An eka tala dravida vimanam is on the sanctum sanctorum. The sigaram was built with bricks. The construction of the temple is like a Vishnu temples, without formal architectural features.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple may be of 200 to 300 years old. The Rishabam base has the recent period inscriptions of the donors.

The temple is under renovation, which includes the construction of Rajagopuram, and expecting for maha Kumbhabhishekam.

LEGENDS
As per the legend, in the process of playing chokkattan, Ambal Cheated Shiva and the Maha Vishnu was also in favour of Amabal. Shiva cursed Ambal to born as a cow in the earth and Maha Vishnu as herdsman. As a cow Ambal roamed on the earth and worshipped Shiva, by milking on a Shiva lingam. Satisfied with Ambal’s worship Shiva pardoned her and relieved her from the curse. Shiva married Parvati and hence Shiva is called as Pasupatheeswarar. Anilaiyappar – Aa - - பசு-நிலையப்பர் பசுபதீஸ்வரர்- Sri Pasupatheeswarar.

Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar chaturthi, Thai poosam, Amavasya days, Pournami days, etc,

The temple will be kept opened between 07.00 hrs to 11.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs to 20.00 hrs.

The temple is about 5.5 KM from Edappadi, 22 KM from Sankagiri, 27 KM from Bhavani Sangameshwarar temple, 31 KM from Anthiyur, and 41 KM from Erode.
