Sri Mahileeswarar Temple / Sri Makizheeswarar Temple / ஸ்ரீ மகிழீஸ்வரர் கோயில், பெருந்தலையூர் / Perunthalaiyur, Erode District, Tamil Nadu.

The 2nd visit to this Sri Mahileeswarar Temple at Perunthalaiyur was a part of “Shiva, Vishnu, Amman Temples and Heritage sites from Komarapalayam to Edappadi Visit” – On 19th May 2024. Thanks to ல மா செல்வராசு, of Komarapalayam for taking me to all these places.  


This temple is on the south side banks of river Bhavani at Perunthalaiyur and on the north bank is a Murugan Temple on a small Hill. The river flows from north to south at this place and joins with Kaveri at Bhavani.

Some of the important features of this temple are ....
The temple is facing east with a 3 tier Rajagopuram on the south side. On the left before the Rajagopuram sannadhi for Vinayagar under bodhi tree. Rishabam, balipeedam, and Vilakkuthoon / Garuda thoon ( Thiru Kurippu thondar's relief on Vilakkuthoon facing Lord Shiva ) are on the east side. Moolavar is of swayambhu came through the Makizha tree forest, hence Shiva is called as Makizhavanamudayar. In Koshtam Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.
 
In the outer prakaram Nalvar, Arjunan, Kannappar, Ganapathy, Valli Devasena Siva Subramaniar, Navagrahas, Chandran, Suriyan, Saniswarar and Bairavar.
 
Ambal is in a separate sannidhi. Ambal is in standing posture  with abaya varada hastham on a square avudayar. The Vigraha is believed to be of Chozha period. There is a bas relief panel installed at the entrance of Ambal Shrine. In that the upper portion is Murugan on Peacock Vahanam and on the bottom, two Donors, a Husband and Wife, bas-reliefs are in Anjali hastam. 

Loose sculptures of Amman and Various deities are kept in Ambal Temple's ardha mandapam and out side the temple. In addition to this some more loose sculptures are dumped on the east side abutting the compound wall, which consists of saptamatrikas in three pieces and Amman.

ARCHITECTURE
The temple consists of sanctum santorum, antarala, ardha mandapam and Maha mandapam. The adhistanam is of pada bandha adhistanam with jagathy, three patta kumudam and pattikai. The Bhitti starts with vedikai. The pilasters are of brahma kantha pilasters with kalasam, kudam, a plain mandi, palakai and vettu pothyal. The prastaram consists of Valapi, Kapotam with nasikudus and viyyalavari. The brick Vimanam is of 2 tiers with nagara sigaram. Shiva, Dakshinamurthy, Maha Vishnu and Brahma are in the tala and greeva koshtams.     

Old mandapam pillars are erected abutting the south side compound wall to know the temple’s antiquity.




HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The Original temple belongs to Chozha period and received contributions from Pandyas and Vijayanagras and Nayakas. The temple was renovated without disturbing the inscriptions.

In one of the inscription Sundara Pandiyan who ruled Kongu Nadu has given Tax exemption to the weavers in the year 1298 CE. 

The other inscriptions records the gifts given to the temple for burning perpetual lamp and naivedyam / amuthu to Shiva of this temple.

This is the birth place to Perunthalaichathan, who composed the Natrinai, one of the sangam literature.

LEGENDS
It was believed that epic Mahabharatha character Vaali and Sugriva worshiped Shri Shiva of this temple.

It is believed that this is one of the 5 temples established by Durvasa Maharishi on the banks of River Bhavani.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas special poojas are conducted on pradosham, Maha Shivaratri, Vinayagar Chaturthi etc.

The temple is kept open between 06.30 Hrs to 12.00 Hrs and 16.30 Hrs to 19.00 Hrs
Pooja timings are 07.00 hrs to 07.30 hrs.

On bus route Erode to Gobichettipalayam get down at Kavindapadi and Perunthalaiyur is 5 Km on the way to Appakudal.
Town bus is available from Kavindapadi Bus stand.
The nearest railway station is Erode, about 20 KM.
